New iMacs shipping with Mavericks?
In the market for a new iMac. Are they shipping with the latest Mavericks OS and fixes pre-loaded or do I have to upgrade?

It should be shipped with Mavericks installed. If the supplier says otherwise when you ask, make it a condition of you purchasing from them.
Thanks but I need to know Yes or No when purchasing from the online Apple Store. Strangely the store doesn't say which version of OS X.
All Macs sold in the Apple Online Store (except some refurbished computers) and Apple Retail Stores come with Mavericks
Sorry, you didn't say where you were buying from. The Apple on-line store should include the OS in the product description ...
The Austrian Apple Store says Mavericks for the iMac but it also says 'How to Upgrade'. So I'm not sure whether that means you have to upgrade once you have the hardware. I'm in the same boat, wanting to buy an iMac but -not having broadband via a landline- not wanting to have to update just after I have the new system.
Except for OS/X the cart summary under Software says nothing. They need to fix this before they get my business.
.
I hadn't got as far as the cart but in the Overview and Tech Specs sections it is Mavericks that is mentioned. But I'm still not clear whether that means pre-installed or needing an upgrade.
Exactly. Let's wait it out.
What's the difference? Mavericks is free upgrade, so once the machine arrives, follow See Pondini's Setup New Mac guide if you wish to migrate from an earlier OS setup and then install Mavericks. If you're not migrating, then after you go through the setup process, install Mavericks. IMO, much to do about nothing.😉
I ordered mine on Oct. 22, right as Mavericks was announced, and mine came without it. I had to install it the same day I set everything up. My initial software was 10.8.5
The software version is material information and needs to be stated/known upfront prior to purchase. I'm not paying for an older version so "Mavericks for free" doesn't cut it. Like fiinding out your new car needs an oil change the day after purchase. ??? If they let me know upfront then OK I guess.
I got my iMac yesterday November 5 and still came with Mountain Lion, it was custom ordered from the online Apple Store, so I guess they are still not shipping or selling with Mavericks pre-installed
Thank you. So it's clear the absence of version information is not accidental. Hard to believe but this is evasiveness for (petty) marketing reasons. ??? Free Mavericks is good but not a substitute for upfront honesty. C'mon Apple.
I ordered my BTO iMac in the Apple Online Store on November 7th and received it yesterday. Even though the Apple employee assured me that my iMac would have Mavericks pre-installed, it wasn't. Manually upgrading the OS to Mavericks was a pain. I would recommend to wait with your order as it seems that Apple is still shipping Mountain Lion with new iMacs.
