iMac (Late 2013) 27" i7 Haswell constant crashing with 32GB RAM

I have Crucial 4x 8GB DDR3L (dual voltage 1.35/1.5 v) RAM sticks and it is very unstable! If I reduce to two sticks i.e. 16GB the system is stable. I have tried them in different orders, but every time I have 32GB in, it crashes at least every couple of hours. Any order of RAM at 16GB is fine.

Have performed Apple Diagnostics + RAM memtest and nothing appears the matter.

Anyone else with ideas or experincing similar issues? I have installed Windows 7 via Bootcamp and running with VirtualBox, but the crashes were happening on the iMac just out of the box with nothing installed with the 32GB in.

I will specifically ask my Apple Service Provider for this kind of Crucial RAM. They already told me that Apple provide them with Kingston but we'll see...

I would remark that it is not acceptable that a machine of more than 3000€ has this kind of problem...

Did they test the late 2013 iMac with 32Gb configuration before putting it into the market? No, of course...

I'm having the same problems as everyone here with my haswell iMac 27" 3.5ghz. I had 24gb Axiom ram installed, received just a few panics per week, then I upped it to 32g since I needed my ram, and now I can get around 15crashes/day. The save button was my mate of all time. I now have yanked it all but 16 of the axiom-- no crashes. I'll get MacMall to swap it out for the full 32 from Crucial this weekend. Wish me luck, and thanks val75 from across the pond.

After a couple of days, all looks to be running smooth with the new Crucial DIMMS.

No more kernel panics since installing & running smooth & faster than before.

I'll keep ou posted, should it change for the worse. I'm rather confident thought that the problem is solved.

Like Gino, I have now passed 2 full days with the new Crucial RAM installed and I am happy to report that I have not had any problems at all. The system seems to be running as smoothly as it did with just the 16GB of stock Apple RAM installed and seems even snappier.

If anything changes, I will, of course, post a followup. As mentioned previously, I tried two other brands of RAM unsuccessfully before this and in both cases the longest the system went without a crash was about 22 hours. I was almost sure the problem was on the iMac end and had my doubts that this Crucial RAM would fix it. If a full week passes with no problems I will consider this issue resolved.

I really want to give a thumbs up to Crucial and their awesome products and excellent service, On their own forums they are very quick to respond to any problems posted.

Hello,

I got my New Apple marked Kingston RAM modules last friday, and all is stable whit these new Kingston modules, no kernel panics whats so ever for me any more, editing and gaming etc.. And no Panics!!!

Im so happy now, and thank you Kingston, as they changed my old RAM modules these new ones.

Kingston full 32GB RAM, no kernel panics.

Don't worry iRideApple. You definitely confirm that Kingston RAM does not work. My Apple Service Provider told me that they have already asked for Crucial RAM modules to replace my RAM. You should do the same...

I am back to report, as promised, after one full week with the new Crucial RAM in my iMac that I have still experienced no problems and the system is running speedily and stably. Please do get your ASP to replace your Kingston with the Crucial CT2C8G3S160BM (2x8GB) because it should completely cure your problems.

I wish a happy resolution to the problems of everyone in this thread and will continue to monitor it for your happy results. I'm so sorry to hear about your continued problems, iRideApple. I really understand what it's like. 🙂

I had heard that the Kingston ram had worked previously. Mine arrives tomorrow hopefully. Let's see how it goes. I may be returning mine and grabbing Crucial too.

OK, I have read all the woes from the original OP. Need some help summerizing.

#1: Has anybody had an issue with 32GB installed by APPLE at the time of purchase?

#2: Has anybody had an issue with home upgrade to 32GB from OWC?

I tried adding 16GB from OWC to the factory 8GB, using the empty slots, and the computer would not turn on (positions checked multiple times). Worked fine with just the factory 8GB.

So if I wanted to max out my late 2013 27" iMax what is the consences recommendation?

OWC solved my problem. I think the original Apple RAM was in slots 1&3 and I had to move them to slots 1&2 and put OWC in slots 3&4.

When you turn on a Late 2013 iMac with a new RAM configuration it can take about 30 seconds to reset itself to the new parameters. During this time the machine will simply sit with a black screen and the Apple chime will not sound until the process is completed.

Are you waiting the full 30 seconds and not turning the machine off before that?
