Q: Stuck in iCloud sign in

My iphone 5 won't give me anything but the iCloud sign in. Repeated attempts to enter a password that works on my desktop are refused, and attempts to reset are answered with the original iCloud sign in screen. ANy suggestions? The phone is essentially not functional this way.
