Thunderbolt display does not charge macbook pro

When connecting the MBP 2013 to the thunderbolt display through thunderbolt cable and power cord (magsafe1 plus magsafe2 adapter), the display shows, but the MBP is not charging. Regular Magsafe2 adapter works fine and charges. Checked the connectors on the adapter and it seems to fit perfectly.

Any suggestions?

After the same problem occurred after a few months with a replacement adapter, I realized after much thought is that I had been keeping my MBP retina elevated on a laptop stand next to the display, and that the cables from the display would pull ever so slightly downward on the connection to the MBP (the cable was routed behind the desk and back up to the display). I've removed the MBP from the stand and placed it directly below the display, and since then, it has only happened once that the charging light on the adapter connector didn't light immediately when the display was connected to the MBP.

I tried something that seems to work. I too have the adaptor. Multiple actually. What I did was remove the adaptor, plug that into The MacBook WITHOUT the power from the monitor in their. Then plug the monitor into the adapter while the adapter is plugged into the laptop.

Comes back to charging light everything on time now. Has anybody else tried this?

I've owned the Thunderbolt display about 5 years and use a MBP with it although most of the time it is connected to the i7 Mac Mini. As a general observation, one should be using the Display as a monitor only and connect your MBP or Mac Computer via the single lead that comes from your Thunderbolt display. The lead from the Display is a single thick cable 6mm in width terminating with a branch of two leads, one is a magnetic lead attaches itself with the MacBook Pro or in my case the MacMini which then plugs directly into the MacMini requiring no further leads. (This is a white plastic lead that plugs into my MacMini). I hope that you understand this procedure. It's a great monitor and works well with either the Mac Computers or the MacMini.
