Q: kernel_task using 100% CPU

Hey guys,

my Macbook Air 2013 is two month old, and ever since I upgraded to Mavericks, kernel_task will sometimes eat up to 100% of my CPU. The system will remain usable, but battery life goes down significantly. A reboot will solve this issue for a time, so will quitting all applications in the menu bar, but some time later kernel_task will return in full force.

Things I did and checked:

  • no faulty sensor
  • hardware check
  • no overheating
  • no app seems to be directly responsible
  • SMC and NVRAM/PRAM reset
  • repaired disk permissions and repaired SSD through the recovery partition
  • not yet reinstalled Mavericks
  • no issues in safe mode, at least yet

I suspect that this is caused by some kernel extension, but I have no idea which one and how to fix that.

I have in the past installed: some fishy USB to Ethernet driver, BOOM (system wide equilizer), LaTEX and probably more things.

I tried your method on my macbook pro 13 inch, 2010 model and it worked!  But I have no idea why or what I do now with the file that I copied and pasted onto my desktop.  Sorry, I am extremely new when it comes to macs, but I am grateful that this method worked as my kernel_task has stopped going crazy and causing my machine to overheat.

    Fixing "kernel_task" overloading your computer!!!

Use this at your own risk. It worked for me.

    Basic Procedure:

1- Click in the apple logo on the upleft corner, select "About This Mac".

    2- Click in "More Info".

    3- Click in "System Report".

4- Take note of "Model Identifier".

    5- Create a new folder called "Recovery_Kernel_Task".

    6- Select Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext

7- Click the mouse right button at that file and select "Show Package Contents"

    8- Open the folder Contents/Resources.

9- Look for the Model Identifier in step 4.

10- Move the file to the folder you've created, if you need to restore the file.

11- Check the folder in step 8 has 49 files instead of 50 (original files).

12- Restart the computer and be happy!

Very nice solution, this worked for me.

Backup, delete IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext (i had to show hidden files first)

    Reboot

    Fast computer again.

    Nice work.

Maybe one day apple will actually offer a solution.

I have this same problem.  Computer was working great.  Updated to Mavericks.  Since then:

--Boot time went from 25 seconds to 4+ minutes

--kernel_task is taking 103% of CPU, with no applications open

I'm at my wit's end with Apple.  How can they release Mavericks with such a serious design flaw?  Has anybody figured out how to fix thsi problem yet?  This is insane.  I've gotten the pinwheel 3 times since typing this message...

Hello, I have experienced the same things, kernel_tasks going up to 400 percent, heat coming of the MBP, unbelievable. Also during that stage it disconnected my 2 2.5 inch external harddrives (one with thunderbolt the other with usb3). But nothing was going on. So I started thinking about the setup. My MBP is connected to a thunderbolt screen (27 inch), connected to the screen is a calldigit thunderbolt station. Hooked to the screen is a fire wire,USB dongle, internet and this call digit station. On the calldigit station is connected, 2.5 external disk usb3 and 2.5 external disk thunderbolt. Also connected is a HDMI switch so I can use two 27 inch monitors for my MBP. Also connected was a usb 3 hub. First started MBP with only the connection to the thunderbolt screen, everything stays OK, kernel_task around 6 percent. Then I hooked in the calldigit station by thunderbolt in the screen and there it went way up to 200 percent, and the message that both external disks where using to much power and where disconnected. Disconnected thunderbolt station and connected the external harddrives straight onto the screen hubs, one by thunderbolt one by usb. No problem. Took out the disks and connected only the thunderbolt station into the screen (no external drives connected), and poof there we go again way up on the kernel_task. OK this has the do something with my thunderbolt station, took all cables out (HDMI and the usb3 hub) started up with screen and station connected, all OK, connected HDMI, all ok, connected USB external disk, all OK, connected thunderbolt external disk, all OK, connected UsB3 hub and bingo there we go. Took the hub out and everything went back to normal. Measured the power supply to the usb3 hub (multi meter), this was below the 5 volts, something is not good with the power supply. The whole system is running smoothly as we speak, no fans blowing (nice and quiet).

Kernel_task is behaving on power used from the screen or the MBP. Maybe something to do with the power management systems.

I tried some things described in these articles but nothing worked. Until, by accident I started the MPB without my thunderbolt screen and everything stayed OK.

This is my experience with the kernel_task going up to the limits causing a very slow and annoying system.

Hope you all can use this experience in finding a solution for the various problems discribed in this discussion.

    Greetings

    Willem

I agree about why would the release such a serious design flaw, seems to be MUCH more common nowadays than it used to be. Will be looking for an alternative to Mac for my next computer.

As for the issue did you try deleting IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext

I had to show my hidden files first, if you don;t know how use a pref pane called secrets.

I have read through most of these posts and some solutions work for some and not for others. I have tried pratically everything listed in this post and many others with little to no success until recently.

    *****Begin Disclaimer*****

Use this method at your own risk. If you are not familiar with killing a process then I suggest reading up on the command. I have only used the method via terminal and not via Activity Monitor. I have had 100% success using the terminal method.

    *****End Disclaimer*****

    Prerequisits.

root access is needed to kill the process via terminal

If when looking into the Activity Monitor you notice the kernel_task is using a substantial amount of the CPU then issue the following command from a terminal. You will need to have "root" or "su" powers to kill the task.

fyi.. The process that is killed will automatically reload.

    Here we go.

    1. Open a terminal

    2. type top

    3. kernel_task should be listed higher up in the list with a CPU percentage being substantually higher than any other process.

    4. Press Command - t to open a new tab within the teminal or either open a new terminal window.

    5. type su and enter the root password if root has been enabled. Otherwise, enable the root account if you have not already done so. *****If you have a standard account which I recommend, you will first have to su to an Admin account and then to the root account. Ex. su Admin (enter password), su root (enter password), type command pkill kernel_task

    6. type pkill kernel_task

    7. reference the initial task tab or window and notice the CPU percentage for the process has fallen

    8. The fan will now quite to a whisper.

As I listed in the disclaimer, I have had 100% success with this method on a less than 2 week old MacBook Air.

I will be automating this process later, however, executing a simple bash script resolves the problem for me at this time.

Alternatively, you may be able to kill the process via Activity Monitor.

Dear Linc, I have the same problem, can I do the same test and send you my results?

You do have Genieo Adware installed, so you can start by getting rid of that Adware Removal Guide : Genieo.

I had to struggle to keep the Mac Geniuses on the subject of kernel_task but once I did that, they came up with the following solution.  That was yesterday.  So far so good.

    1. Move everything out of the following System directories:

    - System/Library/LaunchAgents

    - System/Library/LaunchDaemons

    - System/Library/StartupItems

The first two folders listed will subsequently be automatically repopulated, hopefully without any third-party items that might interfere with kernel_task.  The third had several third-party items but has since remained empty over several reboots.  Because my kernel_task went amok regardless of login, these System folders are most highly suspect.

Move everything out of the following User directory:

    - ~/Library/LaunchAgents

Only one Adobe file has since been repopulated to this folder but again, so far so good.  Because my kernel_task went amok regardless of login, this User folder is least suspect.

My AddressBookSourceSync process has since been very busy, albeit without grinding my CPU to a near halt as did kernel_task.  I suspect it is trying to redo work that might have been undone or disrupted by clearing out those startup directories.  So far AddressBookSourceSync has been very good about what it does, posing no apparent performance impact.
