All attachments, or only some in which case what doc types?
Me too. I've never had this problem before, but I can't open Excel or Word documents on either my iPhone or iPad. I'm just trying to email myself from my PC, and it comes up as winmail.dat (both Excel and Word). Strange - it also has an Xfinity icon on it. I've been sending it to my Gmail acct which is what's on my iPad; whenther I send it from Gmail or from Comcast/Xfinity, it has the Xfinity icon.
I think I figured it out; it seems to be only with my Gmail account. Since I don't have my Comcast email automatically download to my iPad I hadn't tried sending it to that account. But when I downloaded through my Xfinity app - to my Comcast account - it worked fine with .xls, .docx and .doc attachments.
Here is a similar problem:

Winmail.dat files are attachments sent by Microsoft mail applications (Outlook, Outlook Express or Exchange) on a proprietary format called TNEF (transport neutral encapsulation format). Try this tool to open it - Winmail Viewer.

I also couldn't receive .PDFs. After trying about 10 scenarios, here's what I found: whether I send an attachment *from* my gmail or comcast account doesn't matter (both Microsoft & Adobe attachments); but if I send it *to* my gmail account, when I download it directly to my iPad or iPhone, it comes up as winmail.dat. If I go thru my gmail app (don't download the email to iPad), I can open the document & then save it to my computer.
