Jam Packs not showing up.

I updated to Mavericks and have GarageBand 6.0.5. When I opened an old file, the jam Packs show up in the Browser drop down, but there is nothing in the instrument list. When I play the file, it is using the wrong instruments. How do I get the Jam Pack instruments to load in again. I have Mainstage 3, so I know the content is there.

Are you asking about the Software instruments? Are they missing?

Check, if the JamPacks Instruments do show in your Instrument Library.

Have a look at the folder:

/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Sampler/

You should see plenty of Sampler Files and Sampler Instruments.

MainStage 2 used to install these files, so that they are directly accessible for GarageBand, but I am not sure about MainStage 3, since I am still using Mainstage 2.

If instruemnts are missing in the InstrumentsLibrary, try to copy them from the

/Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments/

to the corresponding folders in GarageBand's instrument library.

The software instruments are missing. I found the old jam pack folders, but they are in AIF format, and the ones in the sampler folder are exs files. They are in different folders too. Jam Pack 2, 3 , 4, Voices and World Music are in the Apple Loops folder. I am not sure where Mainstage put the files it installed. There are instruments in the logic folder. Do I have to duplicate them and put them in the GarageBand Sampler folder?

I am not sure where Mainstage put the files it installed. There are instruments in the logic folder.

As I do not own MainStage 3, I do not know, where it installed the instruments. The "Logic" folder is a likely place, since it is supposed to work with Logic.

Copy any folders with .exs files from

/Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments/01 Acoustic Pianos/

to

/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Instruments/

Make sure, you do not create duplicate instruments.

Then try to use the instruments, after restarting your computer. If you get an error message about missing samples, try to locate the samples in the "logic" folder and copy also the correspondng samples to GarageBand's Sampler Files folder.

There is a new version of GarageBand that I just downloaded. The Logic instruments do show up, but not the Jam Packs. I opened the file and it appears to be downloading the missing samples. Looks like some of my old plug-ins will not work though. I'll see what happens when all this downloading is over.

Frustrating. I copied the folders like you suggested, but still not showing up. The Jam Packs are all in the Apple loops folder, but are .caf format. Even for the logic instruments showing I still get files missing messages, but they are for .wav or .aif files. Thanks for the help, by the way. There is a Sampler folder for GarageBand in the user folder also I noticed. I have been putting things in the System Sampler folder for Garageband.

Even for the logic instruments showing I still get files missing messages, but they are for .wav or .aif files.

Take note of the names of the missing .wav and .aif files, and copy those from Logic's /Library/Application Support/Logic/EXS Factory Samples/ or /Library/Application Support/Logic/Ultrabeat Samples/

to GarageBand's

/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Files/

My /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Files/ look like this:

The files I listed are not on the computer anywhere. I did a spotlight search and no results. When I select new sounds in the list, it keeps making me download content, but not for what I want to use, I just get the above file missing message. Guess I am at a deadend. Too bad. Looks like all my old files are trash. I am not sure why content should be missing. Every other system update was no problem, but Mavericks seems to have made a mess of everything. Thanks for the help.

I really don't know what else to try. My installation is to different from yours, since I also have Logic and MainStage 2 installed. The lsamples that are missing for you, are installed in my GB Instrument library and not in the Logic library.

Can you restore your Instrument library from a Time Machine backup?

I can, but I do not see how that would help.

Your old projects used the old version of the JamPacks, but MainStage 3 the newer format of the loops and instruments as it is used in Logic. That is probably why you cannot find certain sampler files, because of the changed format.

Probably could you simply get the missing instruments and loops installed by buying the additional content from the "GarageBand > Purchase More Sounds." menu command, but why should you invest 5$, when you have the old instrument library and loop library on your backup?

The old additional content plus more drummers and arpeggiators can be bought like this:

https://help.apple.com/garageband/mac/10.0/#gbnd9ed77587

Download additional sounds and loops

After you install GarageBand on your computer, additional content, including patches, drummers, and Apple Loops may be available. Some patches, loops, or other content have an icon User uploaded file indicating that it can be downloaded. You can purchase additional content to add to GarageBand.

Some additional content may be needed to perform certain tasks. In these instances, a dialog appears, informing you that additional content is needed, and asking if you want to download it.

Purchase and download additional sounds and loops

  1. Choose GarageBand > Purchase More Sounds.
  2. In the Add more sounds dialog, click Continue.

The new version of GatageBand does not have that menu item. It does have a download more sounds item, which told me I had all the content but that I could download some additional items not yet installed which I did. I managed to get it working enough to get what I needed done. I work with a game company and had to get this out asap. Hopefulyy I can get the program fully functional again, although I am looking at the Logic upgrade. Thanks again for your time and effort. It is much appreciated.

Already did that. It did not help. Now I am getting messages about missing files. The the program offers to download missing files. I download them and then the whole process starts over after several hours of downloading and still no progress I finally gave up. It seems those old audio files and loops may be somewhere that the program is not seeing them. On top of that my 64 bit Korg plug-ins will not work with the new version, but are fine in the old and in Logic. Go figure.
