The iTunes Library Extras.itdb Error

Hi All-

I have just recieved an error for itunes:

"The iTunes Library Extras.itdb file is locked, on locked disc or you do not have write permissions for this file"

My iTunes library, which is truly massive, is on a Time Capsule, which I use as a server.

I've tried to copy the .itdb file to desktop and then move it back into place. This had no effect.

I've tried changing the securities on the folder (were read and write anyway). This had no effect.

Naturally, I have rebooted several times.

Anyone have a suggestion here? These are the only suggestions I could find on the forum, but they are ineffective. It was also suggested to copy the entire itunes folder to desktop and then copy it back, but due to the massive size, this is not possible.

iTunes is the most recent version 11.1.1

Any help is vastly appreciated.

Okay, so I've been having this exact same problem since Mavericks came out. My iTunes library is located on my Netgear NAS server and randomly iTunes would spit out that same error message you posted when I try to open it.

After searching and trying everything everyone has posted before, I've had no luck. However, I just tried something random and I think it fixed the problem.

On your Mac desktop, go to Go -> Connect to Server and connect to your server manually. It should ask you to select the volumes you want to mount. Mount the folders that contain your iTunes library.

I did that and clicked on iTunes and it opened immediately.

Hopefully it also works for you. Cheers!

Hi Feigepai,

Have you resolved this yet? I have the same problem on Mavericks. My iTunes library is on my Buffalo NAS and intermittently I get a 'Choose Your iTunes' library dialogue which is easily enough resolved by pointing iTunes to the shared folder on the NAS but then I get the

"the iTunes library extras.itdb is locked, on a locked disk or you do not have permission to open this type of file"

I have tried rebooting numerous times, repairing permissions, and moving the Extras file to the desktop, as is recommended elsewhere on the forum - ultimately all to no avail.

The error occurs when you have the iTunes library on a networked drive, and the mac in some way looses connection to the networked volume. This may be due to a crash, a network outage or something else.

When the mac doesn't properly close a volume, a file lock may be left hanging on the server/device, and thus prevent iTunes form starting.

The simplest solution to the problem is to reboot the device holding the library. If you have some admin tools available, you can also force quit the ghost login, thus releasing the file locks. When this has been done, iTunes will work as normal.
