Cannot restart since there is disk problem during upgrade

Hi,

Whilst upgrading to OS X I needed to restart and whilst the system was trying to install OS X there appears to be a hard disk issue. The problem is that I cannot restart since it defaults to OS X which is not properly installed. I would like to get the system up on previous OS (Lion) and then use the Disk repair to ascertain the problem. Can anyone assist.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)
