Cannot enter Target Disk Mode. 15" MBP mid 2009 running Mavericks

I tried booting into target disk from power up (using T key) and I watched the white screen with a loading icon for 60 seconds before I decided that wasn't working. I did a normal start up and tried entering through system prefs. I unlock my prefs, click open as target disk. I get a pop up that says enter password to allow system prefs to make changes. All normal things. The problem then is that I cannot enter my password. The box is selected, but I can't type anything in. This has only happened in the past week since the Mavericks install. Anyone else having this issue or is it something unrelated to Mavericks? I did do a permissions repair and still, same thing.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)
