2013 Macbook Air Sound Issues

Alright so I've had my 2013, 13" i7 8GB/512GB Macbook Air for around 2 months. A while back I began encountering issues where the system's sound would just stop working. This issue applies to outputting through headphones and the built in speaker. I pinpointed the problem to occuring only when I closed the laptop while a program was outputting audio through headphones. Examples of programs this has happened with include Spotify, iTunes, and anything that uses audion in Safari (including Netflix and Youtube). After ths occurs, the only way I have found to fix the problem is a complete restart. I am interested to find other people who have, or who have fixed this problem.

On an unrelated note, I have also found a bug where sometimes when I accidently press the power button once and put it to sleep, the computer will sleep but the backlight on the keyboard will stay on. When I press the spacebar to turn it back on, the backlight on the screen will turn on, but the screen will remain black and unchanging. Again, the only thing that will fix this is a forced restart.

Any help that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Exactly the same!!

That means it's not a HW issue, rather a SW glitch!

For the sound issue, I've never experienced it till today (i've been using MBA for 4 months). Guess there's a glitch on the newest version of OS.

And for the 'comma' problem, I think it occurs only when it's running on batteries as I remember. It never happens when it's running on DC power. (If I'm wrong, please tell me.)

These problems seems tidious but are really annoying.

Hope developers and testers figure these out in the next version OS update.

Temporary fixes:

Plug in the headphone and remove it

1. Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405

2. Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Choose the method for:

"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".

Remove the logitech mouse receiver if you have one.

Update Boom, Windows Media Player and all other third party plug-ins.

I have had audio issues: no sound unrelated to settings, vie the audio port or internal speakers. Each time it has occurred, Apple support instructed m on how to reboot my computer. This, of course, is not satisfactory for a new computer. I am now looking in to excahnge it, but I don't know if Macbook Air is the right choice given this problem.

I have had the issue repeatedly despite 4 support encounters through Apple Care. The last recommendation they had was to reinstall Mavricks, which didn't help. So, I have been advised to take the computer back to the Apple store and have them check the hardware itself. Apple will not replace the computer unless the machine has been serviced and the problem continues. I have not figured out what triggers the problem, though some say it occurs for them after they sleep the computer. That's not always the case for mine.

I called the store and the salesperson reported that several people, including himself, have had this issue with new Macs. He assured me that the problem's source is Maveriks and that Apple will be coming out with an update. You can see on the web that many folks are struggling with this problem. However, the Apple support people deny the claim that it's the software and that the problem is widespread.

I am too busy now to take my computer in for servicing; I rely on it too much. I'll let you know what happens once I have had it serviced.

Best wishes

Do not sleep your Air (close the monitor with headphones attached) with headphones attached, this is known to affect some Air under Mavericks.

* this occurrence is being looked into.

Much testing on my own and others as well show that in some instances this occurs in Mavericks.

If you choose you may contact Apple for an appt and diagnostics.

However as said, refrain from having phones attached when you close the monitor to prevent this until it is resolved

Also if you have the APP "BOOM" installed, uninstall it, this can cause same as Ive confirmed.

peace 😊

Thanks everyone, this info helps.

Yes it does seem to occur (so far) only when I close the lid while headphones are plugged in and on wake - no sound.

Hopefully a fix will come out soon. I, too, use the computer far too much to have any servicing done at this point.

Just as a thought - did anyone else's Air come with previous version of the OS that had to be upgraded to Mavericks? I thought my computer would come installed with Mavericks and I wonder if the upgrade process has something to do with it.

Thanks

Yes, my new computer did not come with Mavericks and I had to install it. The upgrade to Mavericks is what the store service rep suspects is the problem. Reinstalling it did not rectify the issue for me. And yes, the issue occurs in relation to headphones, but doesn't always happen with sleep. One time the sound cut off during an active session when I plugged in the headphones.

I have found this forum very helpful and reassuring. Thanks to all!

I'm having similar/same issues. I'm new to Mac's having been a PC user for the past 30 years, so I am totally clueless about most of what was said above. Have a mid 2013 13" Air that I purchased on October 4th (pre Mavericks).

First time the sound issue happened was about a month ago. I had been listening to itunes through the speakers, then switched to headphones to watch netflix. Finished the movie, closed the lid. Next morning opened the lid, pulled out the headphones - no sound. No sound from the speakers or the headphones.

Went to the Apple store and the genius did a reboot with Command Option P and R.

Yesterday morning I went to wake it up and all I got was a backlight dark screen. I did the Command Option P R reboot to get it to come out of that cycle. Watched some videos, listened to music on the speakers yesterday and then watched a netflix movie last night with the headphones.

Now again, I have no sound.

Guess I'll do another hard reboot, but this is pretty ridiculous that the machine can't easily switch between the two...

I'm also experiencing this problem on my 2013 Macbook Air. It resolves when I restart but the episodes are increasing in frequency and it's annoying to be restarting all the time. For me the sound drop is not always associated with leaving the headphones plugged in while the laptop is shut, like everytime i take the headphones out i get a loss of sound. Please release a fix for this soon. I use Mavericks now, but it happened while I was using Mountain Lion too
