Trouble importing from canon t4i into imove

So I have a canon t4i and I've been having trouble importing my videos from my memory card to imovie, and iphoto wont even let me upload it. I tried converting it to AVI (which took a few hours) and It's still not doing anything. I don't know what to do and it's really frustrating.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), imovie- 9.004

Some video clips may not import into iMovie when using the Camera Import window

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4485

From the File menu, choose Import > Movies.
In the dialog that appears, select your camera from the sidebar.
Locate and select the video clips on your camera that you would like to import.
Click the Import button.
