OSX Mavericks Account Picture Location

Hey guys, just wanna ask where exactly does Apple store our user account pictures on OSX Mavericks. For those unsure what I'm talking about, it's the user picture of the operating system, which is accessible through the system preferences pane.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

If you take a picture of yourself using the FaceTime camera, to use as your Login picture, you will find it in this folder (drag or triple-click to select the entire line):

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.ImageKit.RecentPictureService/Data/Library/Images /Recent Pictures/

You will find both a .tiff and a .png. The .tiff is cropped.

What OS X does with it after that may be different, because if you change your account picture to one of the stock selections a copy goes to the same place.

Stock OS X account pictures are in ~/Library/User Pictures

John Galt's answer is correct but it is missing a tiny bit of information. The ~/Library folder is hidden until you make it visible. To do so: In your user home folder, right click, 'show view options' and click 'Show Library Folder'.

You can then browse the folder and find the user image at the path John listed.

I'm trying to find where the photos I took through the system preferences menu are stored as well.

I do not see the option for finding:

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.ImageKit.RecentPictureService/Data/Library/Images /Recent Pictures/

or the option to "show library folder" from my user folder. I even tried unhiding all the folders via the terminal and still can't find either option. Is there something that I am missing?

The library you are looking for is not the one in Macintosh HD. It'll be in your user folder (I made that mistake and couldn't find it either). Also, I believe this is only applicable to OSX Mavericks. If you are using Mavericks, the option to show the library folder should be there in your user folder. Hopefully this screenshot will help:User uploaded file

Hello,

I don't know whether you need to clear lotsa photos or just a few recent pictures like I wanted to do.

Anyway, the MANUAL WAY to do this is actually very simple.

when you view the recent pictures in the preferences>users&groups>(click your photo)>Recents>click on each photo and press DELETE.

Believe it or not, this is a more preferable way for me to do it rather than going to Library.

Hope this helps, please also share to anyone asks the same question 🙂

Adding your own User image in OS X

Convert the image to .png

Copy to the Desktop

Open Utilities

Open Terminal

In the terminal window type

cp /Users/osprdev/desktop/KeithRichards.png /Users/osprdev/library/containers/com.apple.ImageKit.RecentPictureService/data/ library/images/Recent\ Pictures

In this example I am using the filename KeithRichards.png

Then type cd /Users/osprdev/library/containers/com.apple.ImageKit.RecentPictureService/data/ library/images/Recent\ Pictures

You will need to edit the Recents.plist file to add your image.

So type pico Recents.plist

Look for the line

<string>811DF1F2-012D-4F49-826F-68034FCC716D.png</string>

replace 811DF1F2-012D-4F49-826F-68034FCC716D.png (or whatever is ion there) with your the filename of your image.

Save and exit the PICO editor

Go into System Preferences, Users and Groups, click on the current image, and choose the Recents option on the left. This will bring up your default image and one or more blank ones. Click on the blank one, click Edit, position your image and click OK.

Done.
