Q: My late 2013 15" MacBook Pro Retina occasionally does not wake up when lid is opened.

It doesn't happen all the time; but I never know when it might. On those occasions, the computer appears to be completely unresponsive, so I hold down the power key until the computer restarts... but maybe I'm missing something, and there's some other reason why it's simply slow to wake up and I'm being too impatient?

Has anyone else had this problem, or heard about it? Or am I, in fact, being impatient? Is there a solution to this issue other than restarting?

I have the same model with the same problem. My workaround is close the lid and reopen it. I don't think it needs more time than your patient. I put my ear very close to the key board and heard nothing (normally there would be some buzz as capacitors works) after I pressed any key to wake it up. So the machine was simply not responding. Hope apple would fix this with coming update.

I'm having the same problem - it seems to shut off when I leave it on sleep for long periods of time (i.e., overnight). It only started doing this after I upgraded to Mavericks, but I only had it for about a month before Mavericks came out, so I'm not 100% sure that's the issue.

You sure it was shut off or just couldn't wake up? Did it go to normal startup process when you press the power button?

Well, I couldn't hear the fan or any noises like there was something running in the background. One of the times it happened, just a quick push of the power button turned it on (and I read something about Mavericks making the power button a sleep/wake-up option), but the other two or three times it happened, it required multiple jabs of the power button and/or holding it down for a period of time, at which point it made the start-up sound and took me to the beginning log-in screen (with the option of my account or guest account rather than just my account like when it goes to sleep normally). And just now, when I opened the lid, there was a notification asking if I was sure I wanted to log out. I didn't, so I cancelled - and I definitely didn't try to log out before I closed the lid 4 hours ago. Since the desktop/open programs are now saved upon shutdown (one of my favorite features!), it hasn't caused any problems - just a pain, and makes me panic when it doesn't come on like I expect it to.

Same problem here on MBPr 13". Really annoying issue and same step to reproduce:

    - close the lid

    - leave the computer overnight

    - open the lid

Computer does not wake up (keyboard/mouse click unresponsive, no backlight on the display nor apple light at the back). Only solution is to press Power Button for 5 seconds, then press it again to do a cold boot. I tried closing/opening the lid multiple times but it has no effect.

Any plan to fix this issue in the near future?

I concur with all of you. This is an intermittent problem. It is very irritating. I have tried the following to no avail.

    1. Reset SMC

    2. Reset PRAM

Don't know what else to try short of turning off "require password on wake". One poster suggests that type in the password anyway, hit return, and then repeat that. Next time this happens, I will try and report back. Unless some of you get to it first.

I have this exact same problem too. It's not an individual problem, but more likely a widespread problem because I already got exchanged for a brand new machine once and it still happens.

About once/day on average I think.

I have took several videos to show Apple this issue.

I am having the same issue: Occasionally, my 15" Haswell Retina MBP (Core i7, 2.6 GHz, Geforce 750M) simply fails to wake from sleep and the only way to get a response is to hold the power button down for 5-7 secs to kill it, and then press again to start.

Yeah same problem here too with my 13" rMBP, pretty annoying, especially the first time it happened becuae I initially thought that my new rMBP had simply passed away in the middle of the night

Mine is a 13" also...I read somewhere that it could be an issue with either with when/after charging - maybe the charger itself or third party software issues with Office, etc....Apple don't seem to be taking much notice!! Where do we go from here???

Mine definitely isn't anything to do with charging as I just put it to sleep without the charger plugged in and it won't wake up the next morning, it's like having a lazy flatmate!

BUT, I just read on a thread on here that if you go to 'System Preferences' then to 'Energy Saver' and un-tick the 'Put Hard Disks To Sleep When Possible' option and it solves the issue, I've un-ticked that option on both the 'Battery' and the 'Power Adapter' menus, so I will see what happens and confirm my results in due course.
