Q: My late 2013 15" MacBook Pro Retina occasionally does not wake up when lid is opened.

It doesn't happen all the time; but I never know when it might. On those occasions, the computer appears to be completely unresponsive, so I hold down the power key until the computer restarts... but maybe I'm missing something, and there's some other reason why it's simply slow to wake up and I'm being too impatient?

Has anyone else had this problem, or heard about it? Or am I, in fact, being impatient? Is there a solution to this issue other than restarting?

Well, after PRAM reset issue is still here!!! However, hardware test is ok .... Mine MBPr comes with Mountain Lion and I have updgrade to Mavericks when it was released, but I can remember the issue does not occur with 10.8.x ... Is it a Mavericks issue?

    Bye.

I have read 10.9.2 Beta comes with graphics driver changes ... Did you think to wait new release or to go immediately to Genius bar?

Did anyone go to Apple Support and did they fix it?

    Bye.

Try setting "Put hard disks to sleep whenever possible"  in System Preferences / Energy Saver to OFF - it helped me. Not sure if and how this will affect battery life of an SSD-based laptop...

I have been on-and-off with Apple Support about this for a while. (Can't just go to an Apple Store, since I'm stationed in Greenland presently...)

They've had me hop through various hoops to try to fix this and the final thing has been to wipe the SSD completely and do a fresh install of 10.9.1. (Obviously...) So far, no problems, but we'll see...

This FEELS like a kernel/display driver problem. But the intermittency leads me to think it may have to do with hardware power levels being marginal for stable operation during the sleep/wake cycle...

The thing that bugs me is this: When the problem appears and I look at the sleep/wake log, the problem event is written at the time I OPEN the lid. And it is written as a "sleep failure" event, not a "wake failure" event. There is nothing in the log prior to this, so: Did the problem occur when the MBPr tried to go to sleep and just not register until I opened the lid OR did the problem occur on trying to wake and just get written a a sleep failure for some reason...?

    @McPerlt

Thanks for the feedback on your dealings with Apple so far on this issue.  I am in a similiar position in that I'm not currently in the country of purchase so I'm having to wait till I am back home next before taking my laptop into Apple.

And yes I've noticed that the sleep failure message in console shows after you have done the hard-shutdown and re-booted. The problem never occurs on short sleeps which leads me to believe that after so many hours of being in sleep mode the laptop then try's to put itself into full hibernation mode and this is where sometimes it fails to do it and crashes, I assume that because it crashes and basically goes pear shaped - the system isn't able to function the Console' logs correctly and hence doesn't immediately report the sleep failure due to being in a messed up crashed state, but really who knows with that.

I have tested for the possibility of leaving apps open when closing he lid and putting it to sleep, and also for the opposite i.e. making sure every app is fully closed down before closing the lid and putting it to sleep. However the problem occurs in both cases so that's not related to it.

What's annoying is that when it crashes, instead of going into hibernation mode as it should do, it does the very opposite of hibernating and starts doing something extremely exhausting with itself, leading to both a warm laptop and a drained battery come the morning.

So annoying that I have to remind myself every single night to shutdown the laptop before I go to sleep ... such a stupid thing to have to think about on £2,000 laptop.

Any feedback from those who have experimented with ways of resolving this issue and gone for a long period of time without any problems? what resolved it? just want to see if there is a pattern of resolution after a certain period of time.

To ncon64.  I haven't had any non-wake issues since I changed my Power Management settings on 12/21/13, as described in my previous post on page 6 of this thread. While my settings may not work for everyone, they work for me. While I don't leave my computer plugged in all the time,  I rarely use my battery until it gets below 50%, so I don't need the Hibernatemode.  I, also, rarely shut-down the computer since I am home most of the day.  I sleep it periodically during the day  and for 8-10 hours overnight. I'd love to hear from others who have resolved this issue as well.

    Hello everyone,

issue still going here, any ideas if this could be an hardware issue? I am thinkin' about a trip at the store...

or we have just to wait a software update? what do you figured out?

    here's my setup:

    MacBookPro Retina (OS X 10.9.1 - late 2013)

Wacom Cintiq 13HD (linked directly to MacBookPro trough HDMI and USB) (Wacom Driver 6.3.7-3)

Dell 27"inch (U2713HM) (linked directly to MacBookPro trough DisplayPort)

it happens with or without any usb device(s) attached (hubs..HD's..wacom..usb keys..)

    thanks!

    Hi Sandylp,

I'd like to try your suggestion, do you think is it possible for it to work retaining the sleepimage situation? (sometimes my MBP goes into deep hibernate at 0% battery charge)

thanks a lot for your help!

To FrFromMac,  My computer is still working fine since Dec. 21st. I never power it off and it wakes instantly whenever I open the lid.

If you are constantly in a situation, though, where you lose juice and your MacBook has to hibernate, you may not want to disable the Safe Sleep feature. Disabling hibernation means that contents in RAM will not be backed up to the drive should your Mac need to go into safe sleep mode. Also, I have a ssd drive, and I didn't want the constant rewrite on the drive. To answer your question, I suspect that if the safe sleep feature were enabled, the wake from sleep issue would reoccurr.

Below is an explaination of the different sleep modes that I found on the internet:

Sleep: The Mac's RAM is left powered on while it's sleeping. This allows the Mac to wake up very quickly, because there's no need to load anything from the hard drive. This is the default sleep mode for desktop Macs. This mode is also called hibernatemode 0.

Hibernation: In this mode, the contents of RAM are copied to your hard drive before the Mac enters sleep. Once the Mac is sleeping, power is removed from the RAM. When you wake the Mac up, the hard drive must first write the data back to the RAM, so wake time is a bit slower. This is the default sleep mode for portables released before 2005. This mode is also called hibernatemode 1.

Safe Sleep: The RAM contents are copied to the hard drive before the Mac enters sleep, but the RAM remains powered while the Mac is sleeping. Wake time is very fast because the RAM still contains the necessary info. Writing the RAM's contents to the hard drive is a safeguard. Should something happen, such as a battery failure, you can still recover your data.

I'm on my second MBPR 13".   My first one, purchased new in October 2013, went to sleep and never woke up...sort of.  The laptop power came on, but the screen remained black.   This happened after several months of having the same "not waking from sleep" issues in this thread.   Laptop was taken to the genius bar and then sent off for repair under warranty, but I was called a week later and given the option to get a new laptop.   The new laptop arrived in early January and is having the same sleep issues.    I messed with lots of settings per this thread and others, but nothing affected the sleep issue.

For me the sleep issue was only seen when laptop was asleep for long periods of time, overnight mostly.   Depending on what I was doing, I may have put the laptop to sleep plugged in or unplugged, and I might have woken it up plugged in or unplugged.  The problem would occur every few days.

Recently I started a new routine, and haven't seen the problem in over a week, which is encouraging but not conclusive.   Now if I put the laptop to sleep w/o power, I make sure it stays w/o power until I wake it up first.   If I put it to sleep with power, I make sure power is applied until I wake it up.

I rarely have anything plugged into USB or thunderbolt and don't think either of those are related to my problem.  I do think Apple has a design flaw, and I'm very surprised they have done nothing to address it.

One last thing, when I was seeing the problem, sometimes the laptop would start to wake then hang.   I would see the login prompt, but the laptop was otherwise unresponsive.

    @Sandylp

thanks for your tips! I'll evaluate the situation and let you know if I try your solution.

also hope that a software fix (video firmware updates for us?) will very very soon solve the problem,

experiencing this on a multithousand euros/dollars/whatever is everything but pleasant.

    thanks you all

    According to manual page:

hibernatemode = 0 (binary 0000) by default on supported desktops. The

system will not back memory up to persistent storage. The system must

wake from the contents of memory; the system will lose context on power

loss. This is, historically, plain old sleep.

hibernatemode = 3 (binary 0011) by default on supported portables. The

system will store a copy of memory to persistent storage (the disk), and

will power memory during sleep. The system will wake from memory, unless

a power loss forces it to restore from disk image.

hibernatemode = 25 (binary 0001 1001) is only settable via pmset. The

system will store a copy of memory to persistent storage (the disk), and

will remove power to memory. The system will restore from disk image. If

you want "hibernation" - slower sleeps, slower wakes, and better battery

life, you should use this setting.

I am having the same issue, rMBP (13", late 2013) won't wake up. It won't even go to sleep with closing the lid. Will investigate further.
