Q: My late 2013 15" MacBook Pro Retina occasionally does not wake up when lid is opened.

It doesn't happen all the time; but I never know when it might. On those occasions, the computer appears to be completely unresponsive, so I hold down the power key until the computer restarts... but maybe I'm missing something, and there's some other reason why it's simply slow to wake up and I'm being too impatient?

Has anyone else had this problem, or heard about it? Or am I, in fact, being impatient? Is there a solution to this issue other than restarting?

    HI all,

Done experiment....Left calender open and it didn't wake up three times in a row after longish sleeps (first one over night, the others some hours during the day) this has never happened before as I normal don't leave Calender open. Not sure why this would be the case. However, I'm going to turn off Cal now and sleep over night and see if it wakes up.

You might be clutching at straws there mate, reason I say that is because I did a test a couple if weeks back where I put my laptop to sleep with all pass fully quit, unfortunately it made no difference as my laptop continued to crash during long sleeps.

Ok. I'm pretty close to calling my problem solved. (Although my 15" MBPr could prove me wrong by failing to wake from sleep again...)

After doing everything else the Apple Support people told me to, (knowing that it would not work), they finally told me to try to wipe the SDD completely and try with a new install...

I did, botting into internet recovery and making a clean install on a new partition, but I also made a partition with my old config, so I could continue to use my machine meanwhile.

Well, after the wipe and reinstall from internet recovery, my machine has woken regularly every time. But here's the thing: It ALSO wakes every time from my "old" config", not just the new, "clean" install...

I'm confused, but happy that my computer wakes from sleep like it should.

How's it going so far then? How long ago did you so the reinstall of Mavericks i.e. how long has your testing been going so far?

Also, prior to the reinstallation of Mavericks did your rMBP wake up fine from short sleeps (below 2 hours) i.e. only having the problem with long sleeps? Or, was it every single time you closed your laptop no matter how long the sleep period?

Hey bud long-time no see and all that. Just been thinking that you had this long-sleep crash issue when you was running 'Mountain Lion', right? In which case reinstalling mavericks won't make a single difference and most likely won't for me either, with ourselves both having the same sleep failure code in Terminal.

I repartitioned and reinstalled through internet recovery on January 15th, and have had no failures to wake from sleep since then. Before, I my machine would intermittently fail to wake after longish sleep periods (overnight), varying from almost every time to 2-3 times per week.

I have NO good explanation for why this procedure might have helped, since, as I wrote, I am still running on my saved config, recreated from Time Machine.

    But if it works...

Yeah I hope it works mate, definitely the same issue as me and ncon64 have by the sounds of it.

The only reason I'm a bit skeptical that re-installing Mavericks might not work is because, if I recall correctly, according to ncon64, he had this very same issue when he was running Mountain Lion (his machine being an earlier model than the late 2013 release) and upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks didn't solve the issue for him, which would suggest it to be something other than the OS causing it. Unless it's something deep-seated and upgrading, rather than erasing and reinstalling, doesn't get rid of it. Not sure but your test is looking good so far.

I'm probs going to wipe my HD and re-install Mavs when I get back to the UK in 3 weeks time, after all when I call Apple and tell them I've tried PRAM, NVRAM, SMC resets and the rest of it, they will more than likely ask me to re-install Mavs, at least if I try re-install and the problem repeats, I can say I've tried everything so get this fixed immediately.

Yeah, purchased MBPR SSD late 2012 in june 2013 with mountain lion pre-intalled and then purchased Mavericks in Oct 2013. issue was there on both operating systems. I'm sure ive done a re-install also. However, i'm willing to give another go. I'm just going to backup allmy important stuff and then reinstall to factory and see how that goes...

I experienced this exact issue this morning for what I believe is the first time.

How long have you had your rMBP?

What were the symptoms of your issue exactly?

We are experiencing intermittent crashes when the Macbook is asleep for longer than a 3 hour period (approx), whereby when you open the laptop lid there is absolutely nothing you can do to wake it up, it's literally like it's dead, requiring a hard-shutdown (holding down the power button for 10 seconds) then powering up afterwards.

I purchased rMBP in November of 2013.

    2.6 GHZ Intel Core i7

    Mavericks 10.9.1

"Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off"   IS SELECTED

"Put hard disks to sleep when possible"  IS NOT SELECTED.

To my recollection today was either the first or only second time that this has happened.  Definitely only the first time over the last 2 months where I opened the laptop lid this morning and the computer was completely dead.

I quickly pressed the power button (on numersous occasions) and the computer remained completely shut off.  (I didn't know to hold down the power button).  I plugged in the power supply and for over 5 minutes nothing.  Maybe I ended up holding down the power button at one point, not sure, but eventually the MacbookPro rebooted.

The battery level after rebooting displayed 53%.

Like I said, I don't know if this has ever happened before but it definitely hasn't happened anytime recently since I purchased the computer.  I was really thrown off and became concerned that the computer was dead.

Really hope that this doesn't happen again.

    B

I too have had this problem twice now. I have unticked the recommended boxes in the energy saver menu, so I'll see how things go from here...

Hey mate, since your repartition and reinstall of Mavs has your MBP been fine with no wake up failures whatsoever?
