Q: My late 2013 15" MacBook Pro Retina occasionally does not wake up when lid is opened.

It doesn't happen all the time; but I never know when it might. On those occasions, the computer appears to be completely unresponsive, so I hold down the power key until the computer restarts... but maybe I'm missing something, and there's some other reason why it's simply slow to wake up and I'm being too impatient?

Has anyone else had this problem, or heard about it? Or am I, in fact, being impatient? Is there a solution to this issue other than restarting?

There are other threads with the same kind of problem but just started off with a slightly different heading/subject line.

Its an erratic and intermittent problem it’s proving to become very difficult to pin down. If it's a software/instability issue, how do we know...What ever amount of users have a complaint, Apple should have a way of picking up on it and posting known issues that have been passed on and then informing the customers how far down the line they are with rectifying it. Unless Apple have enough complaints (what ever they deem to be worthy of to looking in to), then we will remain in the dark.... Big corporation syndrome!!!!

I have a 15", rmbp with 16gb of ram and a 1 TB ssd bought in October of 2013.  I think it has to do with the pmset settings.  If you Google the problem, you'll find several articles. I have tried changing the pmset settings via Terminal as suggested in another thread on this forum.  Those settings are:

    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3

    sudo pmset -a autopoweroff 0

    sudo pmset -a autopoweroffdelay 36000

    sudo pmset -a standby 0

    sudo pmset -a standbydelay 36000

    sudo pmset -a acwake 0

This worked for awhile, but then I had the same issue of not waking after sleeping over night, so I changed the hibernatemode to 0 and the autopoweroffdelay and standbydelay to 86400, as suggested by other articles on the internet.  (You can always revert to the default settings by  resetting the smc.)  I also unchecked the powernap feature and also unchecked the put the hard drive to sleep box in the Energy Saver Preferences. (Since I have an ssd drive, I don't think the hard drive has to be put to sleep.)  I haven't had the problem for the past several days, but if it happens again, I'l probably take the computer to Apple.

13' macbook pro SSD retina late 2012.

Sandy, if that works that'd be great. However, Apple should be testing that theory...

I totally agree, ncon64! We shouldn't have to try to figure out how to not have this issue on a $3000 computer.

Hi ncon64, so with you saying your machine is a late 2012 one, can I assume that your machine wasn't having this issue prior to upgrading to OS X Mavericks?

Mine is a late 2013 so it's been like this since brand new, if yours has done it since upgrading your OS X then it's defo a Mavericks thing.

Hmmm then it's most likely nothing to do with OS X as I'm assuming that you have updated to Mavericks from Mountain Lion and this fault has remained unchanged.

    Sounds like possibly hardware

I can't take mine to get looked at until end of Feb beginning of March, but I'm for sure taking mine to the store as there's not enough complaints of this issue to make it something software related.

You going to take your to the store ncon64? If so, when? As I obviously want to know the result of it.

Because I can still use it as normal, I'll wait as long as I can, hoping Apple can come up with an answer. I will certainly get it back to them some time before my warrenty is ended. Also, I'm kind of trying to use myself as the patient waiting to find the cure and trying to pin down a trigger that sets off the problem.

Dude.... so you've been waiting over 6 months with this happening without calling Apple? How long has this thread been going? As soon as I can I'll be taking my MacBook in to the shop and if they don't come back with a solid 'yes it's been fixed' I be onto Apple asking for a replacement until they give me one (I'm in Spain for the next 2 months so I'm holding off till I'm back in the UK where I purchased my machine).

As far as I'm concerned, this issue was resolved with latest update 10.9.1 the 18th of December, it's now been 8 days without the problem when it was consistently hung on a black screen every morning.

I'm talking about a MBP Retina 13" late 2013 as people in this thread seem to be talking about other hardware as well.
