You are right, popular apps such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Chrome, are unavailable if you have iOS 5 or lower. I figured i had to find a new way to use them. For those of you who likes the "real" facebook, If you go to www.facebook.com from your safari, you'll have a hard time but, m.facebook.com is a lot more fluid, easier to fit in the iPad.

What I strongly recommend is for you to download Flipboard app. You just have to sync your Facebook and Twitter account and then you can acces your feed in a new, beautiful and fluid way, like you were reading a magazine or a newspaper.

As for any other apps i tried, everything was fine, so before switching to a newer Ipad, just try those simple alternate way, which just gave my ipad 1 a lifetime extension.

This seems to be a glitch which is specific to the 1st generation iPad. have an iPod Touch running iOS 4.2.1 and I just downloaded the Facebook app using the "last compatible version" feature which was introduced in September, 2013. A lot of people have reported this problem on the Facebook help page, so maybe now it will get some attention.

It's not going to get much attention. The app developers determine which iOS version their apps will run on. Facebook made the decision to no longer support earlier iOS versions. There are workarounds as have been mentioned above, but don't expect any real change on this.

I had this problem too, and found the solution in another thread so thought I'd cross-post. The "legacy" (archived) versions of apps are only downloadable if you have already "bought" the app (even if it's free). When I first tried to download the facebook app it told me only that I couldn't do this because it's only compatible with iOS 6+. Following advice I found on this other thread, I used my Apple ID to "buy" the current version of the app, downloading it onto my computer in the app store.

Then I tried to download the app again from the iPad. This time, along with the warning about iOS 6+, it offered to allow me to download the latest compatible version. Bingo!

My daughter had this same problem when setting up apps on the 1gen iPad I gave to her. We tried this last night and it worked. 1. Open Itunes on your laptop ( should work on PC, but I don't know) 2. Go to Apps & Download the Facebook app. Make sure the app has downloaded. 3. Sync your iPad to your laptop (PC) 4. If the app is not on your iPad after syncing, go to the App Store on your IPad and download the Facebook app. When attempting to download you should get the message asking if you want to download the latest compatible version. We also did this to download the compatible iBooks app. Hope this helps.
