calander no longer functions as alarm clock

Prior to Mavericks I used to have my iCal setup to play an audio stream via iTunes as iCal had the ability to open files (a .pls file in my case). As of Mavericks, this no longer seems to be the case in Calander (ver 7.0). Can anyone confirm my observation? Better still, does anyone know how to get Calander to open a file as an alarm/alert action? (Calander does have 'open file' as an alert option but that seems to only apply to applications.)

Currently, I'm doing a work-around using Automator but I'd prefer not to and the fact that I have to is just bugging me, for some reason.

TIA,

eric
