Q: Slow Wifi in Mavericks

After updating to mavericks I have noticed that the wifi internet speed has been hitting highs of 15kb/Sec - making the computer next to unusable for browsing - I know it's not my wifi network as it works fine on my Macbook running 10.7 at the same placement of my iMac.

Has anyone else came up with this problem? Is there gonna be an update soon to fix this?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I have to say a big big thank you. Because since I installed maverick i was ennoyed by wifi slow. I nearly wanted to reinstall previous osx but it;s good I've found your advice and it works good.

I just clicked to DHCP renew and my WIFI is already normal as it was before the osx update.

    Thanks again.

I did some more experimenting, and it looks like it is definitely dns related.

It only happens on my mavericks macbook pro. Local network (192.168.*) is never affected, it always runs smoothly. But internet is ridiculously slow.

Some sites are fast in loading, except for the pictures. Facebook is a nice example. All the text is there, but all the pictures are not. Pictures are usually on a different server - so different dns mapping.

And some sites which have their css on a different server show the bare bone html.

Again, I can only recreate the slow/no network connection problem when I switch from wireless device; i.e. wireless at work (time machine with wireless) - put macbook to sleep and wake it at home (older airport extreme).

All other wired and wireless devices at home (2x ipad2, 2x ipad mini, ps3, server, iphone 4, iphone 4s, imac (also on mavericks)) are not affected in any way.

My iphone that also switches from work to home network is also not affected.

Rebooting works in 75% of the time.

Renewing dhcp lease seems to work sometimes, killing dns responder (sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder) seems to work sometimes, creating a new network location seems to work sometimes. Switching from wired to wireless and back seems to work sometimes.

There is no guarantee which method will work - so it could also be that I'm passed a cache timeout when it starts to work again.

But once it is working, there is no more problem unless I get home the next day. I never have these problems at work - but my machine is asleep for at least 7-9 hrs between putting the macbook to sleep and waking it at work.

This just has to be some dns cache and it definitely is a bug. It is not the wireless station, but it is something that got introduced on mavericks. I just wish apple would spent more time on fixing bugs then on making thinner products.

If you have neighbours, you want to use channels 1, 6 or 11 ONLY. Because of overlapping, all channels in between will interfere. For instance broadcasting on 3 will interfere with both 1 and 6, resulting in slower speeds for you and the other networks you're jamming.

Bad news. What i tried that solved it only temporary. The next time when I switched ON my iMac the problem was there again. Since the next day I need to use cable cross the room from the router to the iMac. Annoying. I started to think again about erasing this maverick and put back a clean virgin Mountain Lion, what was before. That didn't have any problem with wifi. I'm really very disappointed in Apple Inc. , how can they release a system with this big and basic problem. I getting to miss the Linux what I used before buying iMac.

Maybe the Yosemite will be better. Or not.

I'll see.  If I still will have this Mac after few months when that will come.

Updated to 10.9.4 yesterday. Did not fix the problem.

@apple, please fix the issue or revert the networking code to 10.8

In the old days, osx releases were done when they are ready - and flawless. Nowadays it seems keeping the time table is more important...

Please Apple, go back to quality first and do not turn into Microsoft 2....

have 2 macs running the 10.9.4 update both having major issues with wifi slowing !

tested the connection on my phone and the speed is perfect.

tried renewing connections, releasing, restarting, deleting wifi setup, everything i can think of.

this is very very annoying apple.

I updated the 10.9.4 and I was really very curious because in the information they said something to fix in wifi problems.

Well, the wifi is again good, I mean perfect like earlier with Mountain Lion. I've tested the connection speed many times and it was always correct, good.

I'm very happy for using again my iMac without crossing the cable in the flat. But anyway it was a really big shame of the Apple the release a system with such a general mistake and leave it without correction many months. But finally it's ok.

To be honest I still prefer to use again linux. Mostly because I miss to personalise my OS and my desktop. I liked that. And the Apple's mistakes just more reason for it.

Unfortunately it's like a trend about the operation systems. I mean to push out something not good but on time. I had perfectly same experience with some linux distribution in the last 2 years. It's quiet sad to see same about Apple.

I am having this issue as well.  Running on my Mac 10.9.4, 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 Processor, 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory and 60 GB free out of 400 GB on my storage.

I am using AT&T UVerse and get up to 12 mbps on my windows laptop, iPad and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 phone.  My desktop Mac comes in at .82 via speedtest.net.

Best part, my job requires me to be on the internet all day.  Good luck with that.  Have been researching every possible solution and have come up with no fixes at all, including an hour on the phone with AT&T.  Based on my computer I should be flying with the internet.  Instead I am barely crawling.

I have tried all tricks suggested on these pages to speed up my wifi connection but nothing helps. My lapop with Snow Leopard is ten times faster than my mac mini with mavericks. And so is my ipad. There is obviously no solution to this problem. What will happen when we get yosemite?
