IBM's site is a pain to get any information so …

Is your Lotus Symphony up to date? (3.0.1 looks like it could be the latest?).

What version(s) are you all referring to?

When it used to work what OS were you using?

What 'Kind' of application is it? Select it in the Finder select 'File Menu > Get info…' Kind will be displayed in the general section.

Universal (should be able to work on 10.9)

Intel (should be able to work on 10.9)

PowerPC (will not work on 10.9, needs Rosetta which was last available on 10.6)

Are you getting any logs when trying to open it?

Open /Applications/Utilities/Console & read the "All messages" section (show the log list if hidden) to see what appears as this app fails to open. Don't post every single log message here just a few sample ones.

Have you allowed 'run Applications from anywhere' in the Gatekeeper security settings within System Preferences?

Personally I have never heard of this application, so you may get better support on IBM's site or forums, but we can have a go at seeing what could be at fault.

Thanks for trying to help:

- Mac-Book Air 11-inch, Mid 2013

- 1.3 GHz Intel Core i5

- 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

- OS X 10.9 (13A603)

- Symphony worked with OS prior to 10.9 (10.8?)

- the Symphony version is 3.0.1 with FP2

- security settings are ok

- the log when starting Symphony:

Hallo Cardicuff,

I know what your'e saying with Symphony, but I had the same problem as soon as I uploaded Maverick onto my MacBook Air. Symphony just won't open, I do not even get the Log. I deleted Symphony and re-installed to no avail. I think the problem lies with Apple and we shall have to wait for the fix. Again OO and Libre both function.

IBM's download page says Lotus Symphony version 3.0.1 is for…

Macintosh OS X 10.6.2, Macintosh OS X 10.7, Intel only

I'm not sure if I have the right file (I had to jump through hoops to get to the download, it's unclear if I picked the right option, but it seems correct).

I wanted to download it because of the "Unrecognized Java VM" in your error logs it suggests it may require Java, which isn't shipped on Mac OSX anymore (it's a separate download because of security reasons). IBM don't mention Java is required anywhere, which makes me think the log message is a red herring?

The IBM installer looks like it won't run on anything over 10.7 (10.9 fails with an error) and there is a script inside the installer which appears to check for OS 10.7 & Java installed on the Mac. (you can easily hack the installer to remove the check - but what is the point?).

Frankly this isn't Apples fault this doesn't work, IBM don't document the Application requirements (as far as I can see).

You really need to ask IBM, they are the ones that say this OS isn't supported, they are the ones whose installer finishes with this…

You were lucky it worked OK on 10.8, it wasn't intended to do so.

Sorry, the only options you have is to run it on a supported OS, run it on an unsupported OS and accept bugs or move on like IBM seem to be doing.

Apache Open Office 4.0.1 is the recommended solution to this issue. You can download it here: https://www.openoffice.org

IBM has contributed the Lotus Symphony code to the open source Apache OpenOffice project per this article:

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21661339

I've installed Apache Open Office 4.0.1 and it remedies the issue of opening files that Symphony has in Mavericks.

I wish I saw this post earlier, so do apologize for the late reply but wanted to post in case others run into this issue.

Thanks
