("equivalency") COPY of data in spreadsheet to new sheet?

i am having a bit of an issue figuring out how to finalize a spreadsheet. i have a spreadsheet that is about 20 Columns wide and 800 or so Rows long. The Rows are divided up into 18 or so SECTIONS.

i also have a set of TOTALS that summarize the various sections at the BOTTOM so this area is about the size of an 8 x 11 inch sheet and represents what i will be sending out. however, i also have a set of totals on the RIGHT that itemize everything horizontally.

everything obviously is tied into everything else on this sheet and i would not like to COPY the results of the 8 x 11 inch sheet area at the bottom to another /sheet/ so that i can reformat this slightly but also so i can add some "percentage completion" calculations. i would also like to COPY the results on the RIGHT to another sheet so that i can DELETE some of the rows that do not have information in them for this particular project but in a way that will retain the original data. basically this is a template and i want to retain the template but i still have to condense everything down so that it will fit on a page.

for some reason i am not having a very easy time figuring out how to do this.

is there a way to do some kind of "equivalency copy" so that i tell number to copy exactly what i have to another sheet - so that it will update when the original sheet is changed and so that i can edit the "equivalent copy"?

i cannot imagine doing this cell by cell by cell and the spreadsheet is so large at this point i am not sure how keeping it all on the same sheet is going to be manageable.

TIA

HW,

The best way is to divide and conquer. Those 18 Sections would be easier to manage if they were 18 Tables. It's easy to pull a table apart into sub-tables.

thanks jerrold.

i will read up on tables. so far the learning curve is preventing me from finishing which is a bit of a hardship.

can you just give me two sentences on how one would do this and/or which pulldowns one does it from?

i am really loath to jump off into the unknown when i am so close to finishing and way past my deadline for this.

that said i would like to find time to read up on it and experiment so my workflow works a lot better than it does now...

hi wayne.

so i have just a numbers do opened with two sheets and in one sheet i have 18 sections and everything is all linked and totalled up in a new total section at the bottom.

if i want to start using tables i would run a 'create table' command, cut the total section of the bottom out of the spreadsheet and paste it into the new table is that right?

at that point i would - well i would drag the table onto the new sheet where i want the "equivalent" or linked data is that right?

THANK YOU

hi jerrold.

i am having a hard time understanding if i have tables and had thought this was a separate operation like inserting a picture into my spreadsheet. if i have not actively inserted a table do i need to do this in order to create the table or are the rows and cells by default a table?

also, will pasting a table into a /new/ sheet indepentent of where it came from let it remained linked and updated when the copied table is changed...?

THANKS

hi jerrold. thanks. one more here please.

so if i take a range of cells that is a summary of 800 rows of cells and which TOTALS up these items (so that this range of cells is basically composed of cells with " =CellX " - will the new sheet /retain/ the information or is it going to require me somehow to recreate the 15 hours or work in getting it all /totalled/ on the original sheet...?

regards and thanks

hi jerry.

still trying to finish this beast over here.

i am finding that this drag operation is actually /moving/ my data and instead i just want to copy it so that it is active. i mean, it is not possible to construct a large spreadsheets so that everything totals out horizontally or vertically and i really need to be able to copy data so that it is LINKED.

is there a way to get your Original Cat 1 value of 10 and your Cat 2 value of 100 "link copied" so that it is pasted into Modified Cat 1 and Cat 2 in a way that lets the modified cells update when the Original data is changed?

i mean, i know i can do this by entering " = " in the destination cells and then clicking in the Original cells but i need to do this with a multiple selection or i will be doing single = equations for a full day trying to move information cell by cell so that it stays linked...

hi wayne. i will work up an example. thanks.

can i ask that you not ask for a post of mine to be removed without checking with me before removing it? i don't like having posts removed even if you think that it is a redundant post or is repeating a question.

since i am trying to learn the software and since in this case it is not entirely clear that you understand what i am trying to do - deleting a post may have the unhappy consequence of censoring a question that may in fact approach the issue in a slightly different way and which may result in a solution or even an alternative solution.

do you know what i mean? it is uber unpleasant to have a post removed especially when you are trying to find out if there is an alternative solution to a question you are trying hard to get an answer for so you can get something finished for your boss in a way that doesn't result in your losing the job...
