Can I connect my iphone to macbook to transfer files via bluetooth

I have a MacBook Pro running Mavericks and an iPhone 4s. Why can't I connect them via Bluetooth to transfer files from the phone to the MacBook without having to plug it in via iTunes? I could do this with an older LG flip phone easily, but I get a message on the MacBook that it isn't supported. Is this true? Why not?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9), Intel i7 chip 8GB RAM

You can't transfer file from your phone to your Mac via bluetooth, you can only tether.

Here are the supported files http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3647

You use itunes to sync stuff from your phone to Mac or vice versa.
