I have a MacBook Pro running Mavericks and an iPhone 4s. Why can't I connect them via Bluetooth to transfer files from the phone to the MacBook without having to plug it in via iTunes? I could do this with an older LG flip phone easily, but I get a message on the MacBook that it isn't supported. Is this true? Why not?

You can't transfer file from your phone to your Mac via bluetooth, you can only tether.

Yeah, I use iTunes, but it would be great if I could just send a photo via BT to the MacBook without having to plug it in, launch iTunes and do the file transfer via iPhoto or such. Seems odd that third party devices have better connectivity than Apple products with each other. Thanks for clarifying that.
