I get it there is a button on the top right that makes it full screen which is an improvement from mountain lion.
but how am i supposed to turn it back into a regular, smaller window once i've done that?

To return to standard view, move the pointer to the top-right corner of the screen until the menu bar appears, and then click the arrows.
