Epson 3800 printer stoped working when I upgraded to Mavericks. Downloaded the latest Epson driver, v9.17, keep getting error message and not able to print although I can add the printer in Printers/Scanners. Been on the phone with Epson, no results, they recommend talking wth Apple. Hah! Anyone else with this issue? Do I need to go back to Mountain Lion? How big a deal?

Is it an AL-C3800? If so, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669 shows it's supported. Did you try deleting and re-adding the printer? Installing updates?
If not of that works, try deleting the the /Library/Printer/EPSON and the /Library/Caches/Epson/ folder and then reinstalling the updates.
It’s a Stylus Pro 3800. Have tried deleting PPD and Epson folder in the Library and caches, repairing permissions, re-downloading/installing the drivers, restarting, and deleting re-adding the printer. Nothing works, Epson has no further ideas.
Does Epson plan to support this model? Or did they say it's now unsupported?
I spent 2 hours on the phone with an Epson tech guy, another 20 minutes in a live chat, and they had me go through all the steps you outlined, with no better result: printer still giving me a “communications error” message. Their final suggestion was to talk to Apple, they had exhausted everything they knew to try. The fellow on chat even told me I was the only person he knew of with this problem! It appears my only hope may be to revert to Mountain Lion at this point, which I understand is an arduous and risky prospect.
Your are not alone, I attempted to print photos on my 3800 form CS 4, would not print, no driver update for Mavericks, opened photos in CS 6 and printed fine, display and printer printed as calibrated? However, have lost my Matrox connections and Canon FX 300 for video.

Before you revert your system, have you tried the Gutenprint drivers?

Gutenprint shows support for the Stylus Pro 3800.

I have last driver 9.17 of 3800. I try to print from photoshop 5.5 and view error but if i try to print from aperture everithing is OK

I had a MBA with 10.7 and working 3800 Pro Drivers...
After my MBPR arrived I migrated my Profile from the MBA, without programms, to the new Mavericks MBPR ... 3800 Pro is still working perfect as it should!
So... if You have a Time Machine Backup from your 10.8 System... kill your Mac ... fresh install 10.9 ... migrate your Profile from Time Machine Backup... should it work too.
