MacBook Pro keeps crashing

Hello to everyone!

Need an advice for my MacBook Pro. It started to suddenly turn off showing either black screen (and then at the next start a message that it had been restarted because of a problem) or some strange color stuff on the screen. I tested both memory cards with Memtest, tested SSD for any errors, unplugged CD-drive, even unplugged the battery and let the MacBook to run only on the charger power - and still the problem isn't solved - in any case accidently it happens. Sometimes even 4-5 times in a raw.

Maybe you know what it could be? Thanks for help!!!

Here is one of many reports that appear after I force restart the computer:

That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:

  1. A stale or corrupt kernel cache
  2. A damaged OS X installation
  3. A fault in a peripheral device, if any
  4. Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
  5. An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
  6. An obscure bug in OS X

You may already have ruled out some of these.

Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.

You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place.

Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.

If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model.

The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.

In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.

Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.

If your system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.

In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.

If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.

Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Hi everyone I have a lot of frustration because my macbook pro early 2011 begin to fail, make a lot panic collapse and adquire much temperature, I put 16 GB of RAM and never fail, but the last time simply can`t use, I read a lot of forums, some of them say that I have problem with my nvidia GPU, other say that need to change my mother board, sometime I think that bootcamp can be the problem for windows and decide to unistall all, I try anything. but against of all this ideas I decide to make a clear install, deleting the partition of hard disk inclusive, so my MBP boot and download original Mountain Lion from internet and start, I can see that panics crash disaper, this events commonly occurs when I put a video on youtube via Chrome or Safari, but the problem start again just when I install Adobe Flash Player 10.0., I know that, because I dont install anything else, just this plugins, after that, I decide to make the same process include the fat of HD, but this time I decide not install Adobe player, and my Mac it's OK without any kernel crash, I like to know what happen wit adobe and why happen this things.

I solved the problem. Mine started after I tried out Yosemite, reinstalled mavericks.

It had been bothering me non-stop for weeks till I thought I knew when the problem occurred. I experimented and it hasn't crashed even once for over a week now.

The problem usually occurs when you open an application or try to do something that requires more intense graphics. It could be as simple as opening a pdf in preview or dragging icons on the screen.

So I went to settings, under energy saver, I disabled the graphics switching stuff, and poof! the problem disappeared.

Please try this out, If it works for you as well, let others know till apple decides to rectify the problem.

I'm using mbp 15" early 2011, I just hope its not a case of apple doing "Planned Obsoleteness" to make me buy a new one.

Oct 19, 2014 3:29 AM in response to a-majeed-m

Hi there ...

I have to say that I suspect the 'Energy Saver' idea might be a good tactical fix until Apple fix the root cause of the problem. I was updating my Satellite Navigation device and, just as the screen was fading out, the MacBook Pro crashed. Unfortunately I was unable to copy any information about the crash,

but the message said something like "... a software crash has occurred ... your computer will reboot ...".

I've been running Yosemite for a couple of days with no problems and it is worth pointing out that I was running a new App for the SatNav device at the time of the crash. However, the coincidence of the screen fading and the crash seems to fit with your diagnosis. I'll post again if the problem re-surfaces again with the graphics switching disabled in the Energy Saver.

I'm using a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011), with 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM and an M4-CT256M4SSD2 SSD drive.

Hope this helps.

Since installing Yosemite 10.10, now 10.10.1 my MBP, late 2010, crashes three to four times a day. Of course some days it does not. Ran Permissions, Verify Disk, and Safe Mode. None of that stopped the crashing. Sometimes I was reading a website, other times working on documents, there was nothing consistent causing the crashes. Each time I would send Apple the report.

After reading the above I uncheck that box. I will get back with my results, may take a few days.

Feb 7, 2015 1:17 PM in response to Linc Davis

Doesn't this sound like a Yosemite problem and not a hardware issue? I have the same exact problem with a Macbook Pro after updating to Yosemite. I know I could cure myself if I could get back to Mavericks. But didn't clone. Mine unfortunately isn't only three times a day, it is continual every 10 minutes if I am lucky. I guess I am concerned that upper level Mac people don't seem to be taking responsibility. I need clear communication about what I need to do.

MacBook Pro keeps crashing
