My 3G operating system and all info is completely gone. AllI have is the connect to iTunes screen.
It will not restore. I keep getting a message saying it cannot restore.
What can I do ???

What is the EXACT error message you get when you try to restore?
Doing so is considered a hack. It voids any warranty and forfeits all rights to support both here and from Apple.
Hacking can not be discussed here per the TOS.
I am not sure what got deleted but it sounds unacceptable.
If you continue to be unable to restore the device ( we still need the error message) you may need to get the decive repaired.
Apple will still repair the 3G for $149 if it is out of warranty.
