Time capsule: max number of wireless clients?

I use my Airport Time Capsule as a router. Is there a maximum number of wireless clients it can support?

If you have a modem/router provided to you by your Internet Service Provider....and the Time Capsule is configured in Bridge Mode....as it should be to correctly work with a modem/router.....then it is your modem/router that is controlling the number of Internet connections that will be allowed.

In a situation like this, up to 50 devices would be able to connect to the Time Capsule, but because your modem/rotuer is controlling Internet connections, only 5 of the devices would be able to connect to the the Internet.

It is common practice for some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to limit the number of devices that can connect to the Internet. The modem/router can usually be configured to allow more connections.

Another reason can be that the ISP limits the bandwidth of the Internet connection. Each device requires a certain amount of bandwidth, and if your ISP has limited the bandwidth, that would also only allow a limited number of devices to connect.

If you do not know how to check and see if your Time Capsule is configured to operate in Bridge Mode, post back with information about the operating system that you are using on your computer.

If you have a Mac and do not know what operating system you are using, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac and post back with the OS X Version that you see there.

Thank you Bob for the thorough answer. I would like to add that the modem provided by my ISP is really a modem only and does not act as a router. I my actual set-up, I am trying to use my Time Capsule as the router. I also talked to my ISP's technical assistance and the guy told me that my router presently acts like a switch and not like a router. Unfortunately, since the router I am trying to use does not come from them, they cannot assist me with my current issue. To answer your question, I am currently using my wife's MacBook Pro and its operating system is OS X ver 10.7.4. My left my own MacBook Air at the office. Thanks again for your help!

Your modem was/is a router if it allowed you to connect more than one device when the Time Capsule was configured in Bridge Mode.

A modem will deliver only one IP address, so if your Time Capsule was in Bridge Mode, and your "modem" was a modem, only one device would be able to connect to the Internet at a time.

Have you seen any Double NAT warning messages yet? If not, unfortunately, you likely will soon, and that will be another issue to tackle.

Good luck. Keep us posted if you can.
