iPhone 5 rear camera is not working

My iPhone 5 rear camera is not working at all. It happened out of the blue and all the sudden I just see a blurried image that gets stuck. Can anyone help me, please?

Hi Gibox,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. This article has some steps you can try if your iPhone camera is not functioning properly:

iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting

http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2802

Camera isn't functioning

  1. If the screen shows a closed lens or black image, force quit the Camera app.
  2. If you do not see the Camera app on the Home screen, try searching for it in Spotlight. If the camera does not show up in the search, check to make sure that Restrictions are not turned on by tappingSettings > General > Restrictions.
  3. Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from any obstructions. Use a microfiber polishing cloth to clean the lens.
  4. Third-party cases can interfere with the autofocus/exposure feature and the flash (iPhone 4 only); try removing the case if you have image-quality issues with photos.
  5. Try turning iPhone off and then back on.
  6. Tap to focus the camera on the subject. The image may pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as it adjusts.
  7. Try to remain steady while focusing:
    • Still images: Remain steady while taking the picture. If you move too far in any direction, the camera automatically refocuses to the center. Note: If you take a picture with iPhone turned sideways, it is automatically saved in landscape orientation.
    • Video: Adjust focus before you begin recording. After recording begins, you cannot readjust focus until you stop recording. Exiting the Camera application while recording will stop recording and will save the video to the Camera Roll. Note: Video-recording features are not available on original iPhone or iPhone 3G.
  8. If your iPhone has a front and rear camera, try switching between them to verify if the issue persists on both.

Cheers,

- Ari

I have encountered the same problem with iPhone 5 which is up to date on 7.1.2 firmware. Found this thread and read through it carefully, applied everything people suggested thoroughly but nothing worked...I am going to have to take it to Apple Genius Bar I guess and get an replacement. And since it's outside Apple warranty, I am hoping to get my credit card company to cover it as my VISA does provided one year extended warranty without registration.

With all the money we spend on an iPhone you'd expect it last longer, wouldn't it?.....😮

I Have the same problem. i had the phone for over 2 years no luck with warranty... Apple ruled out software fault and told me its hardware and will cost £199 to get it replaced. I have lost all my faith in Apple after using them for over 6 years, I use all apple products - iPad, MacBook & iMac so this is a major let down especially having a 7 month old baby, I would want to take his snaps and record videos from phone but hey nooo I cannot inspire of having an iphone! Ridiculous, Apple better sort out such issues to loyal customers like me...

Despite all of the message here saying that simply resetting the phone or downloading another camera application resolves the problem, it doesn't in my case. I've not been able to use the rear camera for weeks now and I'm only able to use the front camera every so often, when the 'Camera' app doesn't crash because it can't seem to use/access the rear camera.

This is also causing other problems with things such as WhatsApp Web, which needs you to be able to scan a QR code to work. While I should be able to scan the QR code using the front-facing camera the WhatsApp application always tries to use the rear camera first. Because it can't use the rear camera the whole application just crashes and closes.

I have an iPhone 5 which was purchased on the day it came out, almost three years ago, so I appreciate it's an old phone now and completely out of warranty. While the chances are I'll be ordering an iPhone 6S/7 when it comes out in a few weeks I was wondering whether anyone had any other suggestions I can try to get me through the next few weeks until I can order a new phone.

Any assistance appreciated!

I am having the same problem. Unbelievable that so many people have this issue, but we can't do anything against such a giant as apple. The lost their good will and support in keeping customers long term customers. Had issues with my macbook pro two times (two different devices), later I had bought an original Apple battery for my MacBook Pro, it blew itself up after 2 years, which made me decide to buy a non-branded battery since they have at least 3 years of warranty.

Apple (certainly you don't read this but) have a look at your production and warranty. Keep your customers happy in the long term and they will remain your customers, but for me (fanatic apple fan) I am looking for a new organization to take over the position of Apple. You lost your spirit.

I can´t believe that the last 3 iPhones (2 iPhones 5 and 1 iPhone 5S) had the same issue with the camera. Fortunately my last 2 iPhones 5 were under the limit of the warranty and they gave me in both cases a new iPhone as a replacement!! But now after almost 2 years since I bought my iPhone 5S I have no warranty... This is a shame because you Apple know about these problems and you don´t care about our inconvenients that this provoke to us, because your products are not cheap and we pay for quality and we don´t receive it.

In my own opinion (I know you don't care it) you should give us in these cases a extended warranty, specially when we have in perfect conditions the phone and when we have the cases and experiences before in more than one case.

I would like to say that I'm gonna change the brand of my phone but unfortunately no one gives me the power that I already have with an iPhone talking about of my work (I´m a computer engineer).

I tested all the recommendations in this threat but sadly nothing worked for me... I need to assume that I spent more than 900 USD (here in Mexico) only to buy a problem 😟

Thanks and I hope someone over there could read this

For reference: Here’s how Camera app behaves when there’s no camera present (it’s physically detached).

Not making any points, it’s just a reference.

DO NOT EVER DISASSEMBLE YOUR IPHONE. Apple shuns this activity for a reason. You can (and will) ruin TouchID, screen assembly and everything else if you do it. Right now the only thing to do is to pray to your gods that this is the only software problem.

Hi Mayham006! I was freaked out the whole week thinking how to resolve the issue of my rear camera. It was the same issue you and your wife have been in.. Well, I just checked some tips and instructions on how to recover my rear camera. One of the easy and practical suggestions I saw was from you.. And immediately, I just tried it. And after 30 seconds, I turned it on and yes, it worked!! Thank you!! Hope everyone who's struggling with their iPhone's rear camera could see this reply and try.. 🙂

My iPhone 5 is 3 years, 5 months old. The problem started yesterday where the rear camera won't work in the camera app and in snapchat app. Then this morning even my front camera stopped working as well, but after I restarted my phone it worked again. However, the rear camera is still not working, I have tried installing the latest update iOS 9.3.2 (knowing that before that it was up to date), I also tried resetting all the settings, and restarting my phone, and pressing both home and power buttons at the same time, and the voiceover thing, but nothing works. I really doubt it's hardware because I haven't dropped it recently or anything. HELP! I am traveling tomorrow and I really want to take pictures with my phone...

I bought my iPhone 5s when it first came out, it didn't have much problems until the latest iOS update. My camera shows a black screen whenever I open it but the video, time lapse and slow motion features are functioning well. I managed to swipe the screen and the camera recovered but I could not switch the front and rear camera successfully. The only way to take pictures is to use burst. Apps like snapchat and FaceTime worked well so I really think it's a software problem. Any ideas on how to solve this problem for my case? Help would really be appreciated

Apple: Fix it!

You're starting to be more and more like Microsoft!

If you're going to consistently push updates to my phone, so much so that it drives me bat**** crazy, make sure it works.

I keep hoping you'll restore my faith in the iPhone whenever you push an update, but it always results in loss of functionality, without fixing the camera.

Fix the camera issue already and no more "it's a hardware issue" excuses. I'll keep deleting future 9 updates unless it's specifically going to fix the rear camera issue. If it doesn't, after 4 generations of iPhone, I'll pull the plug and go to Android.

im going to enjoy watching your stock crumble, while Steve rolls around in his grave.

Smash the status quo, but conform to MS. Way to sell out.
