Dec 29, 2015 3:15 PM in response to Giboxby PusheenCat,Heyo~
I found another "ghetto" fix that works almost every time for me.
Next time you encounter this problem, open the Camera app and tap on the front/back button so fast like it owes you money until blurry pictures would be almost completely black. Now close the app and reopen it. Try to switch to back camera, and it should work. It could take a little more time to start, but for me it works every time (sometimes from the second time).
Add: Sometimes it might even start working while you are still tapping on the front/back button.

Feb 20, 2016 2:34 PM in response to Giboxby PusheenCat,For reference: Here’s how Camera app behaves when there’s no camera present (it’s physically detached).

Not making any points, it’s just a reference.
DO NOT EVER DISASSEMBLE YOUR IPHONE. Apple shuns this activity for a reason. You can (and will) ruin TouchID, screen assembly and everything else if you do it. Right now the only thing to do is to pray to your gods that this is the only software problem.

Feb 20, 2016 2:46 PM in response to Mayham006by PusheenCat,Another thing: how viewfinder on Apple Watch works with the camera lag:

At first it was like whoa what the heck mate, I don’t know what to do, and then the camera freezes. When turning on the front camera it works fine. So does anyone of you have Apple Watch? Mine didn’t do that until I got one as far as I recall.

Mar 25, 2016 12:58 PM in response to Giboxby PusheenCat,Turns out that my iPhone had a failing flash microscheme, which caused the camera to fail. Everything else was placebo things that didn't help. Now I'm waiting for my iPhone to come out from the repair shop. One more thing - flash driver is pretty close to the processor, so it can be accidentally fried. Now I will be stuck with no TouchID

Mar 30, 2016 1:35 PM in response to Giboxby ScottUserName,Adding to this.
I bought a refurbished iPhone 5S mid 2015. The somewhat inconsistent issue with the camera became worse (back camera not working at all, selfie camera working <50% of the time, mostly without some functions).
I tried every SOFTWARE-related solution I've read about, to no avail, and even had a little short-lived luck pressing the camera back in I think.Just before I was about to send it in (near the end of my 6 mo. warranty), it started working again, so I didn't send it in. Of course, a week later, it was back to it's ways...
My solution:
I picked up a rear camera kit on Amazon ($10-15) and replaced the rear camera. I used this guide: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+5s+Rear+Facing+Camera+Replacement/20259
What i noticed was that that the thin insulating material over the camera was missing (see pics in above link). After process of elimination (over 2hr and dozens of variations of parts in place with the old and new camera in place), I decided to leave the "front panel assembly cable bracket that covers the logic board" OFF as it seemed that this might have been shorting out the camera due to the lack of the small insulating piece of material. (I even tried to substitute a small amount of electrician's tape for this missing piece, but it didn't help.)
FYI, I also noticed that the bracket that would normal cover theh home button cable was missing, and one of the screws (upper left) for the aforementioned bracket was stripped. I presume this reflected the refurbishing and made me wonder if the missing insulating piece that normally goes over the camera was also secondary to the refurb. I even suspect that the refurb was for the camera, as the replacement camera that I got did NOT have this insulating piece. This may be my phones 3rd camera.
So, with the phone back together, with a new camera (not taking any chances that the old camera was damaged), the phone's camera has worked normally for several days now.

Apr 3, 2016 6:15 PM in response to Mayham006by Vino02,Hi Mayham006! I was freaked out the whole week thinking how to resolve the issue of my rear camera. It was the same issue you and your wife have been in.. Well, I just checked some tips and instructions on how to recover my rear camera. One of the easy and practical suggestions I saw was from you.. And immediately, I just tried it. And after 30 seconds, I turned it on and yes, it worked!! Thank you!! Hope everyone who's struggling with their iPhone's rear camera could see this reply and try..
