Here's what worked for me (twice). Same symptoms as most others. Front camera works fine, rear camera doesn't but when switching from front to rear kind of "freezes" a blurry image and then gets stuck. Other things work such as being able to slide from photo to video...sort of...but get more and more sluggish and eventually they freeze up too. This EXACT same thing happened on both my iPhone 4s and now my 5S. The first time, after trying EVERYTHING I came across online over several panic-stricken days, I finally took it to the Apple store where they determined it must be a hardware problem BUT they had no replacement in stock at that time. Took it back home (since the rest of the phone did work) left the phone plugged in with the camera on and voila. Worked fine the next day and ever since.

When the same thing happened with my iphone 5S I, once again, panicked and searched anew for a solution for several days. Occurred to me last night what worked the last time: LEAVE IT PLUGGED IN WITH THE CAMERA "ON" OVERNIGHT. I sure was a happy camper this morning. Works fine.

Even I'm skeptical that it'll work for everyone but I'd sure like to know. Can't hurt to try it the night before you head off the Genius Bar?

Despite all of the message here saying that simply resetting the phone or downloading another camera application resolves the problem, it doesn't in my case. I've not been able to use the rear camera for weeks now and I'm only able to use the front camera every so often, when the 'Camera' app doesn't crash because it can't seem to use/access the rear camera.

This is also causing other problems with things such as WhatsApp Web, which needs you to be able to scan a QR code to work. While I should be able to scan the QR code using the front-facing camera the WhatsApp application always tries to use the rear camera first. Because it can't use the rear camera the whole application just crashes and closes.

I have an iPhone 5 which was purchased on the day it came out, almost three years ago, so I appreciate it's an old phone now and completely out of warranty. While the chances are I'll be ordering an iPhone 6S/7 when it comes out in a few weeks I was wondering whether anyone had any other suggestions I can try to get me through the next few weeks until I can order a new phone.

    Any assistance appreciated!

I am having the same problem. Unbelievable that so many people have this issue, but we can't do anything against such a giant as apple. The lost their good will and support in keeping customers long term customers. Had issues with my macbook pro two times (two different devices), later I had bought an original Apple battery for my MacBook Pro, it blew itself up after 2 years, which made me decide to buy a non-branded battery since they have at least 3 years of warranty.

Apple (certainly you don't read this but) have a look at your production and warranty. Keep your customers happy in the long term and they will remain your customers, but for me (fanatic apple fan) I am looking for a new organization to take over the position of Apple. You lost your spirit.

I had the same problem this week. I got this phone like 2 years ago but this is the first time I see this problem. After I tried all the solution i could find here and none of them worked but one. Tapping the rear camera with the palm of your hand (not too hard) seems to work. I believe it is because i dropped my iphone the same day the camera stopped working so maybe that is what cause this problem. After tapping my phone with my hand it worked! then i tapped it again and it stopped working again and so on, so i think that maybe something got loose when I dropped it. I hope you find this review helpful.

Same issue since installing IOS 9.  Tried every suggestion in this thread. Maybe leaving it on overnight will do the trick.

I had exactly the same problem. Take your phone with two hands and try to bend it .it will not really bend, obviously, but it helped for me. I was also pushing on the screen until I saw it on the screen. (the same thing you see when you touch your laptop screen).

I can´t believe that the last 3 iPhones (2 iPhones 5 and 1 iPhone 5S) had the same issue with the camera. Fortunately my last 2 iPhones 5 were under the limit of the warranty and they gave me in both cases a new iPhone as a replacement!! But now after almost 2 years since I bought my iPhone 5S I have no warranty... This is a shame because you Apple know about these problems and you don´t care about our inconvenients that this provoke to us, because your products are not cheap and we pay for quality and we don´t receive it.

In my own opinion (I know you don't care it) you should give us in these cases a extended warranty, specially when we have in perfect conditions the phone and when we have the cases and experiences before in more than one case.

I would like to say that I'm gonna change the brand of my phone but unfortunately no one gives me the power that I already have with an iPhone talking about of my work (I´m a computer engineer).

I tested all the recommendations in this threat but sadly nothing worked for me... I need to assume that I spent more than 900 USD (here in Mexico) only to buy a problem

Thanks and I hope someone over there could read this

I just fixed mine using this method http://osxdaily.com/2014/06/22/iphone-camera-not-working-press-fix/

    Exactly what I did...

Get a pen, pencil with eraser, or something else that's about the size of the camera lens.

I used a pen like this (NOT THE WRITING END!! Use the clicker end) https://www.qualitylogoproducts.com/custom-pens/the-nash-pen-superextralarge-194 815.jpg

Take off any case on the phone

Lay the phone face down (rear camera should be facing up)

Press down on the camera lens (using slight pressure) until you hear a click. The lens should pop into the hole slightly (about 1mm)

Open up the camera app and it should be working now.

    Hi all,

Here are the steps to solve it.

    1. Reset your settings (Resets and updates your configurations after update. In my case, 4 digit pin was replaced with 6 digit pin)

    2. Disable access of all apps to camera

    3. Install snapchat app. A thrd party app is required since camera app is experiencing issues. Use it to enable flash is disabled or not working

    4. Reset you phone again. Use snapchat to enable flash. Use flash. Use sanpchat to take sanps. The camera will work now.

    5. Use camera app now. It should work.

Worked for me. Hope this will be helpful.

    Regards,

(iphone 5s, iOs 9.02) - Here was my problem: rear camera was
black, could toggle to front camera which worked fine, toggle to rear camera -
would freeze & get triangle notification that "flash too hot and would
have to cool down in order to use."

I did all the recommended things I could find on the internet: soft reset, reset all settings, pressure with thumb on rear camera, etc.  Finally, feeling like I would not be able to find a solution, I decided to inquire if it is a hardware issue but not by going to Genius bar.

I live in LA, and took it to a private party iphone repair place.  The owner opened up my phone, and his work station is in a open bullpen area which I like since I can see exactly he is doing to exam the phone.

He indicated a cable was loose and noticed that the cover to hold the wire down was missing.  He put a new on for me.  Camera and flashlight all fixed!! So my recommendation is that those who have this problem may have something as simple as a wire that is loose.  If you are in LA, let me know, and I will tell you where I went.  If you are not in LA, then I advise taking it to someone or open the phone yourself as I am sure a loose wire will be easy to see.
