Airdrop - no link between laptop and iPad?

Is it possible to connect a Macbook Pro to an iPad via Airdrop?

I have a 2010 MBP running 10.7.5 and an iPad Air running iOS7 - both have Airdrop active, yet neither is seeing the other device?

I have successfully used Airdrop between two iPad airs, but i also want to use it with my laptop!

can this be done or do i have to stick with using iTunes to transfer data?

airdrop can only be used mac to mac or iDevice to iDevice, a Mac can not airdrop to an iDevice and vice versa.

That's a bit rubbish, tbh. Do you know why you can't AirDrop between an iDevice and a Mac?
