@apple,
I also had this issue. The trackpad would be jumpy, freeze, disappear, switch screens or pages, highlight stuff randomly, and just be overall difficult to use. I updated to Maverick the day it came out for my 13" late 2009 Pro (not retina) and it was fine until a few days ago.
Apple had me do a SMC reset and a NVRAM reset. I did the SMC reset several times and it would help for a little while but then the issues would start again. I just did the NVRAM reset and all seems to be ok. Let's hope it stays that way...give it a try and see how they work for you.
Keeps on happening with me too. There is not permanent fix to this. It is just one of the many bugs and annoyances apple customers have to put up with.
I'm having the same problem with my track pad and keyboard. It is really irritating me. I'm thinking about just backing up my Mac and wiping it out.
So I took my 2011 MBP (out of warranty) to the Apple store to have it diagnosed by the genius. Turns out the track pad and keyboard went out, but to fix it required the replacement of the whole top aluminum case as well. It costed $240.00 (parts & labor) to get it fixed but I now have a like new laptop again. It also came with a 90 day warranty. It was a lot cheaper then I thought it would be to have all of that replaced.
I also had an issue with the lid having a slight overbite due to it being dropped shortly after I purchased my MacBook Pro, and the apple genius was able to fix that as well.
So to anyone that is having a issue with their Mac, take it to the Apple genius to have it diagnosed. It's free and they will tell you what's wrong and how much to have it fixed.
Hi @apple
I don't know if this is still relevant, but maybe you have "Mouse Keys" activated, try pressing the option key ("Alt") 5 times, this should toggle between the two states.
thanks, so simple but you saved the day
Ok. I'm extremely late to this particular party but here's the solution for the benefit of all affected users.
There's an option to control the mouse pointer by using the arrow keys. Hitting the Option key 5 times in succession will activate this (seemingly useless) feature, thereby rendering the keys inoperable.
To re-enable the keyboard press the Option key (on the keyboard) 5 times.
Failing that restart your Mac. Use the Trackpad (if you have one) to Save your work if asked.
I just had my keyboard and trackpad die, and had to follow the Reset PRAM (NVRAM) article to get it back to life again.
Why did this happen on my MacBook Pro?
So simple!! i work with Ableton, i never would have thought this, but after pressing the option key so many times i must have inadvertently disabled the keyboard. I've been searching for weeks for this, i thought there was something terminally wrong with my system, THANK YOU!.
Have you found a solution to this problem?
This worked for me as well. I did nothing but verify and repair my disks, and everything said it was "OK", but when I restarted, my keyboard and trackpad was back to normal!
Hi guys,
I am in a really strange situation. I am having two problems same time and I don't know where to start or where to search the answer. My Macbook Pro is stuck on spinning wheel and the same time keyboard is down and not responding.
The problem started when suddenly keyboard started typing some wierd symbols. Then for a while some keys where disabled and some were working but eventually all stopped working including pad (but not pad keys). after turning computer off and then back on it stuck on logo and spinning. After that I have never seen my desktop back on again 😟 a little tip would be great what should I do and how to start my laptop back on without losing any data inside? Thank you very much for any kind information.
This response from CNet worked for me.

I wouldn't have thought that the Windows "shut up and reboot" would fix this issue for me, but it did.
I good reminder to reboot your machine before sticking it in the fridge...
