Is it possible to use the free Pages app on new iPads when using Configurator?

We understood that Pages, Keynote, Numbers, and other apps would be free for our new iPads. We are a K12 school and use Apple Configurator to supervise student devices. These apps are showing up as paid apps. Is there a way to make this work?

If we log into iTunes on an unsupervised device, we can download the apps free. However, this is not possible for student devices.
