When I convert a raw file to JPEG, the JPEG file ends up being about a third the size. Why is that?

Remember the name of an export does not force it to be what he name implies. That is any preset can be edited and the name left as it was. Make sure the preset you are using is really set to the settings you want.

Also with JPG;s the quality slider will have the most effect on the file size of the output file.

Also if you are sending this out to print see if they take a Tiff file. You'll get better quality.

How are you measuring size? If in bytes, why are you concerned about the size in bytes compared to a RAW file of the same pixel dimensions?

JPG, Original Size, Quality 12 is the best JPG file you can create of an Image in Aperture.

I use export and select JPEG original size 16 bit

Is that correct? I didn't think JPG could have a higher bit depth than 8 bits.

If you need top-notch quality prints, use a printer that accepts (and knows how to print) 16-bit TIFFs.
