Yep: my thought is trash Pages 5 and revert to 4.3, which has that capabilitity.

I think you must mean Pages 5, since there is no Pages 10.  Pages 5 is the most recent, and a lot of people here are upset about various missing features.  Like dozens of them.  Basic ones.

Pages 4.3 should still be in an iWorks folder within your Applications folder.

You are asking the wrong people.

Not sure if Apple knows, or whether it was removed because you can't do it on the iOS version of Pages.

Apple is trying to make the iOS version and Mac versions match. Some incredibly stupid or lazy developers/designers took the iOS version as the standard and changed the OSX version to match. The stupidity in this is that iOS is not a good platform for work in the first place, it's incredibly cludgy to edit/write documents on the ipad, email maybe but editing real documents is a pain is the wazoo. The iPad is ok for watching videos, reading, browsing, but not for efficient work. Being able to select multiple items and work on them is a basic feature of most editors and has been for years. Microsoft Office for OSX is so much better that it will be difficult for Apple can catch up even if they wanted to. It's too bad for Apple makes prettier apps. And now MS Word for the iPad is available and free.

Problem Solved:

If you are creating a page layout document rather than a written document with text body, you can click on the Document button (upper righthand corner next to the Format button) to change the document setup. Document setup can also be found in the menus under View / Inspector / Document Setup.

To use the document in page layout format where you can use your cursor to select multiple elements at once, unclick the Document Body check box in the Document Setup. That's all you need to do.

You don't have to convert your document to Layout mode, which will cause other unwanted problems, just to select multiple objects.
