There are many online apps can do the video conversion for you, such as zamzar, Acethinker Video Converter, mediaconverter, etc. They are totally free, and you don't have to download or install anything. Take Acethinker as sample, here are the steps.

Here are the steps to convert videos with Acethinker

1) Visit the online converter (https://acethinker.com/online-converter)

2) Click 'select files to start', locate your MP4 video and add it into the app

3) Select MOV as output format in the Format drop-down list.

5) Click Convert button and select a folder to save your converted video

6) Click Start to run the conversion, that's all.

How do I convert mp4 files to mov files for use in Quicktime?

Use the QT 7 Pro or MPEG Streamclip "Save As..." option to the audio and video data from the MP4 file container to an MOV file container. This is not a conversion since the data is not actually transcoded. If you really want to convert the MPEG-4/AAC data to different compression formats, then use an export to QuickTime option and select the specific audio and video compression formats you want to put in the MOV file container.

It is a little bit surprising that you want to convert MP4 movies to open it with QuickTime, because QuickTime should be able to read / play these kinds of movies.

May be you would get some better hints if you describe

- what kind of MP4 movies do you have (extension, video compression format)

- why can you not open it with QuickTime (or what happens if you try to)

- which Mac OS X version are you using

According to Apple Support Website, QuickTime can only support MPEG-4 (.mp4, .m4v), but MP4 is a complex video container with various video and audio codecs. That's why sometimes QuickTime plays MP4 well, sometimes doesn't.

Here is a solution I just found on Macrumors forum as following:

To solve QuickTime won't play MP4 issue, a strongly recommended solution is to convert all kinds of MP4 videos and movies to QuickTime more compatible formats.

Hope it will help you more or less.
