Mail automatically marks previewed messages as "read"

Is there any plugin/addon that I can install to prevent Mail from automatically marking messages as "read" when I flip through them in the preview pane? For example, if I read a message and then delete it, Mail automaically moves on to preview the next email - and marks it as "read", in the process. I just want to prevent that behavior, and Apple devs have foolishly chosen NOT to allow users to have that level of customization by default.

I've been using TruePreview, but the plugin has not been updated since Mavericks came out and the developer has not responded to any of the DOZENS of tickets that have been posted to his website.

When I select a message for preview in Mac email, either with a mouse click or with arrows, how do I prevent it from automatically changing to "Read" status. I don't want it to change until I actually open the message. This is very easy to do in Outlook - but can't figure it out on Mac...i am running El Capitan 10.11.6

did i say this is soon easy in outlook?? Help!

Hands down one of my largest gripes with Mail. It would seem Mail and I have two different definitions of what "Read" means -- just because it automatically shows up in my preview pane after I delete the mail next to it doesn't mean I actually read it.

TruePreview was great while it lasted, but this really needs to be an optional setting built directly into Mail.

Well... It seem there is 2 guy`s in Montreal that developped an application that "address" this issue. However, the application is 25$... Which I find a little expensive...

You can find it here if interrested. www.indev.ca/MailActOn.html

However, since there is nothing else (that I did find) out there, I might be stuck paying for it...

It is ******* me off from 2 points of view...

First, This shoud be a feature built-in by Apple withing Mail.... I mean ! Common ! This is basic stuff !

Second, the attitude of truepreview... At least, if he`s tired to play with mail, just say so... Stop accepting the money. If he`s just dead, well... Sorry for the family then...😝

Apple is only making softwaare for dummy's, not people that know and use computers extensively. Automatic marking mail as read robs from real users the opportunity to use Mail as a simple task mamager (using Reminders, Notifications, and Calendar, all separate apps is a non-starter).

I'm looking for a reasonable replacementand maybe going back to Entourage...
