SMS Photos to non iPhone users...

When I send a photo to a non iPhone user, it seems like it takes forever for that photo to send IF it sends at all. Often times it will say message sent failure if i noticed I never got a response from that person. Anybody know why this is? It never does this when I send a photo to another iPhone user.
