Changing to NAT type 1/2 on a Time Capsule for PS3 to work.

Hi everyone.

I have read most of the posts available on this issue. But as I really arent any genius in computer language I have difficulties understanding where to get information and what things are.

I have a NAT type 3 problem on my Playstation and in the Airport Utility tool I can see that the mode is on "Bridging". I tried to switch to DHCP and NAT, but that just gave me a double NAT problem. Can someone explain to me how I fix this and when I have to inter IP & MAC adresses from my PS3, where I exactly collect these informations.

Thank you guys!

If you get a "Double NAT" warning with the AirPort configured as a router (both NAT & DHCP are enabled) then you have another router upstream of it that is already providing these services.

When you reconfigured the AirPort as a bridge it becomes a "pass-thru" device. Any issues with NAT for the PS3 will need to be addressed with that upstream router, not the AirPort.

Thanks for the reply.

So there should be another router somewhere? The Time Capsule is connected directly to the plug in the wall, so there is not anything between that one and where the connection is issued from. Are you sure there have to be "another" router for the network to send out double NAT?

And is there anything I can do if I'm unable to locate the "other" router?

Without knowing your exact networking configuration I can't say for sure but I am pretty confident that if you are getting a double NAT warning when the TC is configured as a router there must be another device beyond that wall connection that is providing NAT.

Regardless it would be that device that would need to be reconfigured to open the NAT setting for your PS3. That is because when your TC is configured as a bridge NAT is disabled.

It is virtual certainty that the complex is using a "main" router that provides Internet connections to all of the Ethernet wall jacks in the building or buildings there.

That would be the "upstream" router that Tesserax is speaking about.

With the TC configured in Bridge Mode, NAT is completely turned off, so if you are having issues with NAT, you are unfortunately at the mercy of the "upstream" router and the settings that the IT manager has configured the "main" router to use.

I found out this to be the problem as I ended up contacting the internet supplier which agreed that a solution similar to the one you mention is set up. He offered me to buy a public/static IP address, which would solve the problem. Do you know if that will cause me troubles on the rest of my devices (3 computers, 2 phones and 1 apple tv)? And how would that practically have to be configured in the airport utility tool to make it work?

Simply having a Public or Static IP address would not help your NAT situation unless you were planning to set up your own Internet connection at your home, and not rely on the service that the complex was providing.

In other words, the service provider would pull a cable directly into your home and connect it to a modem. Then, the modem would connect to your TC.

Since there are so many different ways for a provider to set up Internet service, it is not possible to say whether a new separate Internet connection would do what you want without actually being on site to run some tests.

I think your best bet would be to get an IT specialist out to survey your network and propose a setup that would do what you want.....along with a guarantee that it will actually do what you want. Ideally, the IT guy will tell you that he has set up other systems in the past, and that he is experienced with PS3 setup situations.

Unfortunately, it sounds as if your provider did not give you the correct advice.

As i said in my last post......
