iPad Air 128Gb WiFi Only - Dropping WiFi Connection

Hi,

I have just gone from an iPad3 64Gb WiFi Only to an iPad Air 128Gb WiFi Only.

I am connecting to the Internet at home via BT Infinity using the BT Home Hub 3.0.

I am in the same room and it regularily drops the WiFi connection!

This was happening with both of my iPads, but never with my PC or Laptop!

This also happens when I am away from home using the BTWiFi Hotspots that most BT Home Hubs automatically generate.

This behaviour has also been noted on another friends iPad2 that was using VirginMedia WiFi.

I am an IBM Mainframe Systems Programmer by trade and therefore maybe a little experienced with computers?

Any pointers would be greatfully received or does this look like Apple have a problem with WiFi?

Regards,

Charlie.

Just got my 16GB iPad Air a week ago and it has been dropping the wifi about once every couple of days. No other devices I have do that. It recovered by itself in about a minute twice and the other 2X I had to go back into the wifi settings and reconnect. I have a 2wire AT&T router that is only b/g. My iPhone 4 doesn't have an issue nor my desktop.

I did most of the stuff in this thread and still had issues. So, the way I fix mine, is to give a static IP to my iPad Air 128GB for my home WiFi and all my problems went away.

So perhaps there is a bug, perhaps it is in the handling of the DHCP part of the network. Not sure. But if you put a static ip for your WiFi, unless you change your network, no need to fix this issue again.

I have same problem with my 128 gig iPad air, but it was also happening with my old New Ipad. Don't know when it started but it regularly drops wifi connection. Almost every morning I have to turn wifi off and on again to reconnect. I think it is also happening more than I realize because it defaults to cellular and you don't realize it other than by seeing slower loading of web pages. (I have poor cellular signal where I live.). The other odd thing is that even when it is not connected I still see a wifi cone in upper left of screen, which I would think shouldn't be there if I'm not connected.

This whole thing drives me nuts and since I don't understand routers I'm helpless to try most of these fixes. "Renew lease" does not work, that I know. An ATT person said they are getting a lot of these complaints and had me type in a new DNS address but, while it seemed to solved the immediate issue that night, it has not stopped the periodic dropping of wifi coupled with no automatic reconnection.

I was wrong. It happen to me again. I lost connection even with a static IP.

I am still trying a few things. There is a lot of WiFi signal in my house, lots of neighbours. I used a WiFi Signal tool on my Mac and found out that all the WiFis are in the 2.4GHz band and also in the 20MHz range. So I put mine in the 40MHz range and also used the channel 13. I am lucky to be in EU, so I can use channel 13. I notice that no one was in there all the others were on 11, 9 and a few on 7 and 3.

So far so good, but I will keep you posted. I also notice at one point that my WiFi did not drop, but I still did not have internet. I then notice that I had access to my network but no internet, that seems to have been my DNS, it was an one time thing, so I will see next time.

I am wondering if with the new Apple AirPort the one with the newest WiFi, I think with 802.11ac, would make a difference.

I will see this week if it is better.

Hi,

Since I have set my router to the 40Mhz option, I have not experienced any drop outs while watching iPlayer. Looks like this may have been the answer to my problems, but it has only been a few weeks and I have started using the download queue to save programs for ofline viewing, so my streaming viewing has been less.

Will continue to monitor and update in a few weeks or if it fails again!

Loving the iPad Air and all the extra storage you have with 128Gb!

Charlie.

I too am having similar issues. I have an Air 128 and have noticed teo issues: (1) the WiFi connection will drop then almost immediately reconnect (keeps repeating this cycle, drop, connect, drop, connect, etc.), but does not connect long enough to really do anything on the net; (2) the WIFI connection from a configuration stand point appears good in settings and signal strength appears the strongest possible, but no internet connectivity. We have a DSL internet provider and am using a Netgear N600 router. Updated everything on the network (firmware) and double checked my configs, but have no answers. Our iPhones 5S and MAC Air do not seem to have any issues over the past couple of months, just the iPad Air. My only remedy is to hard reset the iPad (soft shut down does not always resolve the issue). Looking forward to a real long term solution.

I too have been experiencing what appear to be the same issues on the 128GB iPad air w/at&t.

*After a while, seemingly more than a day or two, Internet request over existing wifi connection no longer returns requests/data*. Ie, web browser times out and informs me the pages are not available.

Am not experiencing issues over wifi with sem-perma-connected Linux laptop, android phone, iPhone 5.

Nor was I experiencing issues with previous iPad 3 32GB w/at&t for 18 months on same router & internet with no issues.

I *believe* I was not experiencing with iPad air 64Gb w/at&t, but had that less than 2 weeks before exchanging for 128GB, so that led me to believe it was this very specific 128gb iPad, and not all iPads in general.

Easiest way for my to work around the problem is to reconnect with the network. Either turn off wifi and turn it back on, or to choose a different wifi SSID and return to mine - I have 2 available. Based on another person's comments in this thread leads me to think it could be related to not renewing the dhcp lease. I know my router is set with a longer lease than normal, so if that were the culprit, I would experience this issue much less than other people, for it would take longer for the lease to expire and cancel the subscription. For reference, lease time here is set for 4 days. I feel like I lose connectivity maybe 1x a week.

I shall start tracking which days I get dropped, and note if or not I use someone else's wifi in the meantime.

If anyone who loses their connection multiple times a day could perhaps check on their lease times and see if it's short, say an hour or 3, so we could compare notes?

Thank-you!!

Since to many are experiencing the same issue, I doubt it's an issue with my own personal iPad. That's what I wanted to know, for I half-expected to return it. Apparently not.
