Q: Ipad air low memory crash

I came to this forum to see if other ipad air owners are experiencing same problem with low memory crashing as I do but seems like I'm one of the few people have this. So far I have 10 low memory crash reports. I also have about 30 more crash reports but it's from various apps. I got my ipad air on the launch day, second in line, here in California. Maybe I just have a defective one, I don't know. If you have same issues, please reply so I can determine if I should return it or just live with it. Closing apps every day is a hassle. I wish Apple just put in extra gig of ram. Overall, I am extremely happy with my ipad. There are so many good this things to mention about this ipad but this is wrong thread to do that.

Icn50, you should return it and wait for the next version that has more memory, or get an ipad 4.

Me, and 3 other people (at least) in this thread have gone to the Apple store and reproduced the crashes on EVERY iPad Air in the store, in front of Apple employees.

However, people like blablowski refuse to post a screen shot of their diagnostic log to lend credibility to their never ending, near daily claims to having no crashes.

Again, me and 3 other people in this thread were able to reproduce the CRASHES ON EVERY IPAD AIR IN THE APPLE STORE, IN FRONT OF APPLE EMPLOYEES.

At this point, since we're sort of in a holding pattern, I find the question "How widespread is the crashing issue? " fascinating. I teach statistics, and we talk about how you answer questions like this.

You can't ask all iPad owners. Apple has a lot of data, but they won't share.

These threads are not random or necessarily unbiased samples. Speculation is not a statistical tool.

For me, the strongest evidence is my experience, two iPad 4s and an Air all crashing from new devices or new installs. Further, the frequency of that same narrative (which I tend to believe), refutes the idea of freaky coincidence, or the "hot hand" explanation.

So to me, the null hypothesis is "All iPads crash"

To refute it, I would  want data on iPads that don't crash on any of the websites that crash our devices.

That's also the information crucial to solving the problem. What makes them immune.

So anyone on this thread not having crashes should contact Apple support. You might have a special device.

All that said, I'm not giving up my iPad.

I agree with you, psmyth. These "miracle" ipads need serious study to see what is different.....

These people denying there is a serious problem are inspiring me.

I am going to go back to the Apple store soon. I will make a video. In this video, I will be going from one iPad Air to every other iPad Air on display at the store, and reproducing the crashes. I will then post the 100% CRASH rate to YouTube. I will post the link to the video here.

Each time someone claims their iPad Air doesnt crash, I will repost the link of the 100% crash rate in the Apple store, and request the anyone who denies there is a problem to submit their diagnostic log, to lend credibility to somehow being immune to the systemic problem.

I never said I don't have low memory logs on my iPad.  I have plenty of them.  My iPad simply doesn't crash or ever reboot.  I suspect every iPad user, regardless of model or iOS version has low memory logs.  That doesn't mean their devices crash.

I had no trouble with my I pad air for the first few weeks. Then it started to crash. Went to store and was told to check I hadn't too many apps open at once. I monitored this but crashing has become more and more frequent. Wondered if it was because I have uploaded more apps over the 2 months I have owned the I pad. Has this affected the I pads performance? Should I be going back to store to complain ?

It would be interesting to compare the app lists from users who have crashing devices and see if there is some connection linking these to crashes.  Since the App developers are responsible for updating their apps to run under the current iOS, perhaps there are some apps, which cause issues that other's don't have if they don't have the same apps on their device.

There is another thread regarding IOS 7 problems safari crashes and for all I know there could be similar issues being discussed on other threads.  So there are more people having problems besides those in this thread.

I have had no soft reboots since resetting my iPad to new two weeks ago and not using the backups.  I also did not load any games this time.  Although I am being careful not to move too quickly from app to app or scroll quickly I still have had a few crashes to the home screen with the twitter app, pages and safari.  I still leave lots of apps open and tabs on safari.  I have to wonder if the games was where I had the most soft reboots.  Just as well I took them off...

All in all I can say I am still glad I have the iPad Air.  I picked up a friends iPad 3 the other day and couldn't believe how heavy it was!  However, when I see people say that they have not had any crashes I wonder if I should take mine in for a replacement.  I am happy to hear that others do not have this problem but it certainly makes me wonder...

I feel that a lot of crashes have to do with the application.  I was working with the Mercury browser, with the low memory warning set.  When it warned of low memory, the memory monitor reported plenty of free memory.  The only difference was that the page out count had increased.  Without the warning enabled, the app crashed.  There is a dissertation available that describes how memory management works.  One of two things is happening here.  Either the Mercury app can't handle the IOS7 memory management or IOS7 is paging out pages that are critical for the operation of the app.  Strangely enough, I cannot get Safari to crash now.  I did have it hang up today with 3 tabs open.  The system monitor showed a cpu core maxed out.  Once I deleted the app, the cpu usage returned to normal.

Most of my crashes have been in Safari, when trying to navigate around the itunes or app store, or using iphoto. Even if I shut down all other apps Safari crashes constantly.

I still have the ipad 2 running the same (latest) version of ios, and get hardly any crashes. It seems to be a problem to do with the ipad air. What I've no idea!

    Hi,

I would like to say a few words about the meaning of "low memory logs"

If you have a low memory log on your iPad, it indicates that you iPad had a crash!!!

That log is a "crash log" generated by IOS after it has killed an app for low-memory conditions.

    Pls see:

I quote from the last website:

...if your app still needs more memory, the OS terminates your app and generates a crash log.

The OS does not generate a crash log for the background apps that were terminated under this circumstance."

    Hi,

I'm having the same problems as so many of you with my iPad Air. I tried everything, like resetting the settings, manually deleting and re-installing apps and even a clean install of the system (setting it up as a new iPad). Unfortunately the problem has only become worse; yesterdag I had 8 Safari crashes, all low memory ones.

A few minutes ago I had a phone call with Apple Support. A rather negative one, I have to admit. The person I spoke to totally denied he heard of this problem before ("if so, we would have been a lot busier at this moment"). He requested a diagnostics on the spot, looked at it, affirmed the problem, but still wants to collect my iPad for further investigation. Which is kind of difficult for me since I use it on a daily base for my work.

I also asked him if this problem will be dealt with in iOS 7.1, but again he denied it because the problem isn't known to Apple...

I guess I don't have any choice but to hand my iPad in for further investigation, but I must say I'm very displeased with the way Apple treats its loyal customers.

    Rudi

I beg to differ with you Fabio.  Not once has any application, not Safari, not Pandora, not mail, not Zinio, not NetFlix, not YouTube, stopped working while I was using them.  Not once.  I believe the definition of a crash is the device stops running or as you quoted, OS terminates your app.  And many of you are saying your devices reboot.  Let me make this as clear as possible:

AT NO TIME HAS ANY APPLICATION STOPPED RUNNING, NOR HAS MY DEVICE REBOOTED.  NOT ONCE.

Clearly, a low memory log does not mean a device has crashed.  BTW, we have two iPhone 5, and an iPad 4th generation, all running iOS 7.0.4.  They too show low memory logs.  And not one of them ever stops running apps, or reboots.  Never.  And if you are sitting there watching low memory logs, thinking your iPad is woefully messed up, maybe just use your devices and stop looking at memory logs.  If however, your device does actually terminate an application or reboot while you are using an application, that's not normal and needs to be addressed.

    Hi,

"Unfortunately" my device, when IOS (very often sometime...) kills an app for low memory it does log the report so that I can see it in Diagnostic section.

That's what the low memory logs are for "my" iPad air, with IOS 7.0.4....

About soft reboots, in my ipad air have been very few luckily

Just for curiosity, could you please copy and paste a low memory log from your devices and post it in this thread?

    thank you!

    ciao

Fabio, since I don't send diagnostics to Apple, I turned it off, so I can't see the logs anymore.  I had turned it onfor a while just so I could see what all the angst was about.  During the time I had it on, I had low memory logs, but never any crashes or interrupted use of my device.  You're just going to have to take my word on the fact my device doesn't crash.  And while I can't screenshot the logs, they were there for the time I had diagnostics on all our devices.
