Q: Ipad air low memory crash

I came to this forum to see if other ipad air owners are experiencing same problem with low memory crashing as I do but seems like I'm one of the few people have this. So far I have 10 low memory crash reports. I also have about 30 more crash reports but it's from various apps. I got my ipad air on the launch day, second in line, here in California. Maybe I just have a defective one, I don't know. If you have same issues, please reply so I can determine if I should return it or just live with it. Closing apps every day is a hassle. I wish Apple just put in extra gig of ram. Overall, I am extremely happy with my ipad. There are so many good this things to mention about this ipad but this is wrong thread to do that.

    Hello Forum,

I did a complete restore of my Ipad Air.

    1. Reloaded iOS 7.0.4

    3. Put backup back

    This process took 3 hours.

Then guess what  happens the moment I click this famous link.

    http://9to5mac.com/2013/11/08/a-week-with-the-ipad-air-in-three-words-believe-th e-hype/?3e3ea140

Safari crash and Low-Memory crash dump. this after 3 minutes of the full restore.

Do I believe my iPad is hardware wise broken NO.
So I point again Apple Support and my reseller to this point and thread. Yes

Do I believe that the iPad Air product has a problem. Yes.

Do I know or have a confirmation from Apple that this issue will absolute be fixed (March???). NO.

So I will go back to my reseller and Apple pointing it out one more time. If they still want my iPad Air back fine, I will do so. I am convinced the replacement loaded with the same backup will crash on the same. We will see on that of course.

The hassle is that replacing my iPad Air for nothing is a bit of a hassle. I have to delivered it wiped clean.

Why.... it also my corporate used iPad.

    Brgds,

    Bas.

    Hi,

I also get a crash when I go to

    http://9to5mac.com/2013/11/08/a-week-with-the-ipad-air-in-three-words-believe-th e-hype or

    http://www.nin.com

I have been using my iPad Air in landscape mode. If I use my iPad in portrait mode, I don't get the crash.

For some reason, running in portrait mode uses less memory.

    Some sites like

    http://9to5mac.com/2013/10/25/new-iwork-ilife-apps-go-for-simplicity-upset-power -users-all-over-again

I still get the crash in portrait mode,

However, I have been using portrait mode for the last couple of days and the crashes happen much less frequently.

Oddly, someone on You Tube showed the same portrait vs. landscape as you are writing about. His still crashed, but according to hi, far fewer crashes when using portrait rather than landscape mode.

All these discussions about "a majority of" versus "Minority of" are ludicrous.  With 90 percent of iPad owners now having upgraded to 7.0.4--90 percent of those who can, that is--how in the he-- would we possibly know whether a minority or majority of those using 7.0.4 consists of a minority or majority?

This is an impossibility to know until Apple tells us what it is.  Whether majority or minority, the problem needs fixing whether by software or an iPad recall (if necessary) after the Hardware issue is fixed, the bad part replaced or whatever it takes. But Apple has OFFICIALLY recognized there is a problem, the cause still unknown, but is now a Priority I issue, and is working on getting the fix out ASAP.

IF NOT FIXABLE, WHAT WILL APPLE DO FOR US?  That's my concern.  For purchases made at a vendor other than Apple, will they be bound by Apple's policy or just follow suit on their own?  I hope so.

We, whether a majority or minority has had this problem or the owners have not used the right application to cause this crash, it will be fixed, or Apple will die trying.

Actually, it's statistically possible to get a fair estimate of how widespread this is. While these threads aren't random samples, there are many posts of users getting replacements  which crash even as new setups. No one has posted that a replacement fixed the problem. Several posters have reported crashing all the display iPads in a store. No one has reported not crashing them.

Everyone may not experience the Safari crash issue because it may be somewhat site specific and hence user specific.

I would argue that those posting that they have no crashes are problematic data points.

My take from all these posts (all the way back to 2010) is that crashes have a history, by greatly increased in iOS 7 and are more likely on, but definitely not limited to, iPad Airs. I've been through these with two iPad 4s and an iPad Air.

Anyone who has a bad (or good) experience at the Apple store should do the follow up survey. Apple pays attention to these. Get a case number.

They are not only not random, they are heavily weighted toward the subset of people with problems. The reason people like me and rbrylawski seem like outliers to you is because the most people who's iPad Airs are working perfectly aren't stopping by a technical support forum to say, "Hey guys, I took the trouble to register, figure out which forum to post in, how to start a new thread just to tell you I'm not having any problems.". No one goes and waits in the waiting room of a crowded emergency room just so they can get a chance to tell a doctor they're feeling completely healthy.

I absolutely agree with you about doing follow up surveys for postive experiences. Those surveys also tend to be answered more often by unhappy people than by those who were satisfied. It makes being in customer service a bit frustrating at times.

    Best of luck.

Meg, I get your points. But I think it's hard to explain as coincidence the repeated devices having the same problem. Also he lack of any reports that a new device didn't fix anything. You can bet that would get posted here.  I do statistics, so I ponder those things.  Runs, coincidences, sampling. Of course, Apple has the data, and I wouldn't talk either. But my senior advisor says it's widespread.

Beyond wanting my iPad not to crash on my local newspaper site, this whole thing has become a fascinating story from a lot of angles. Even these threads. How Genius's communicate (or don't) with each other.

I expect a solution because I still appreciate Apple, but I really want to know what caused this. We've all been through a lot here.

    jacklee,

Just tried http://www.nin.com on my iPhone 5s (same CPU, RAM, and iOS version as the Air).

Safari crashed the first time, but not the second time I tried.

    Hi Meg,

For me this is a discussion, not an argument. So please don't take offense at anything I say. I am not intending to be disrespectful.

Regarding surveys, I agree that they tend to be skewed more toward unhappy customers. If only because we all hate taking surveys.

Regarding the ER analogy, yes healthy people ever go to the ER to tell the docs how good they feel ... But many people don't go to the ER when they are sick either. These people may brush off their illness as nothing, or they don't think they are sick enough, or it is just too much of a hassle.

I just picked up my fourth iPad air in the last two weeks. I was basically told in a non direct way that ios 7.1 would fix the problem. Advised to use chrome until it's released.

When 7.1 is released, could you and others (except the trolls) please leave a message here if it has fixed the problems (not just safari, but also other programs and reboots), as I actually miss my iPad air (problems or not), my ipad 1 is just too slow, a lot of apps dont work on it.

In short I would like to buy one again, but  want to to know if I should wait for memory upgrade or if 7.1 fixes all.

    Thanks.

That's what I'm doing, waiting for either A) an update, or B) a refresh ipad (better option as its 2014 and just about every tab out now has a quad core/2 gig plus of ram ( including the samsung note 10.1 im typing from)." the reloading tabs" is a nuisance.

Safari keeps crashing here too. And using chrome did not fix the problem...

Diagnostics tab is full of low memory logs.

It seems 1gb is not enough ram to handle a 64bit chip...

Now I guess all apple wants is us to wait for and buy the soon to be 2gb ipad air "S" with a fingerprint sensor, a better camera an a smaller battery... Ridiculous...

Chrome didn't fix it for me either. There are however many developers who have posted in several forums that 7.1 fixes it. The crashes say low memory, but it about how the software allocates the memory, and Safari is bein fixed to not use soooo much. I do agree 1 gb is probably not enough, but if this many people say they are running fine with 7.1, I will hold a little faith.
