Q: Ipad air low memory crash

I came to this forum to see if other ipad air owners are experiencing same problem with low memory crashing as I do but seems like I'm one of the few people have this. So far I have 10 low memory crash reports. I also have about 30 more crash reports but it's from various apps. I got my ipad air on the launch day, second in line, here in California. Maybe I just have a defective one, I don't know. If you have same issues, please reply so I can determine if I should return it or just live with it. Closing apps every day is a hassle. I wish Apple just put in extra gig of ram. Overall, I am extremely happy with my ipad. There are so many good this things to mention about this ipad but this is wrong thread to do that.

Talked with AppleCare. Girl was aware of the issue and said 7.1 was intended to fix it. The main site that had been crashing so far has been stable. We'll see.

I emailed my senior advisor the same question. Will report answer.

    Love the new keyboard.

And what about the random reboot? In the update log they have written "Fixes a bug that could occasionally cause a home screen crash"...I hope that they fix this problem at least!

I don't think that refers to the random restarts. I think it refers to the occasionally crash where all the icons disappear. I don't think it has addresses the restarts, not had one yet, give it a day.

Got the final 7.1 installed...  And Safari still crash at all the same website it used to with 7.0.6, nothing changed...  I guess we will have to wait for the next REVOLUTIONARY iPad with 2Gb of RAM, or... buy something else.

And while I understand that this is a forum for Apple iPad, some of you should at least try to understand the frustration of others.  If another device, from another company, at the same or lower cost, is able to work without any crash, it should be commented.  No need for S.T.F.U., or F.O.  Grow up and accept that Apple is no king anymore.

Fabio, are you using Safari when the crash happens? If you are, what website are you viewing and what are you tapping on when it happens?

    It's been an interesting month.

Since I have updated devices to 7.0.6 and killed applications not in use on my iPad Air 128Gb, the crashes has gone. Today, I updated the iPads to 7.1 and will continue to monitor the situation but I am beginning to think how applications use Apple's iOS has a large part to play in fixing this issue.

Here is what I recommend others do based on what I did with my "control" device - iPad Air 128gb, to mitigate the crashes.

    1. Update to the latest iOS. If your settings -> general -> about...version doesn't say 7.0.6 or better yet, 7.1, you haven't updated your iPhone or iPad yet. Go force the upgrade by connecting your iPad to a USB port on your PC or Mac running iTunes. I recommend 7.1 because it probably fixes more security vulnerabilities which were recently reported in the media.

    2. Make sure you synchronize your iPhone or iPad first. But more importantly, make sure all your apps are updated as well. In iTunes, go to Library -> Apps and hit update all and make sure everything is up to date.

    3. Kill all the running apps that you absolutely don't need in the background. To do this, fast double push the home button or use four fingers to swipe upwards on your home screen to show all the applications running. Swipe left and right using one finger to show all the running apps. Swipe upwards using one finger against any application you don't need to run. You can always restart the app so make it a practice to kill apps you don't need. Personally, I have 9 apps always running - Home screen, Mail, Facebook, LinkedIn, Safari, 1password, one note, iMessage and kindle. All others, I might inadvertently leave running but when I do remember, I go to this list and kill them when they are no longer needed.

After you have done all of this (including updating and killing apps for the first time), hard switch off the iPhone or iPad. In other words, press and hold the power button until you are asking to swipe right if you want to power off. Power it back on and use the device as you normally would. Measure how long your experience lasts for before a crash.

Mine never came back. While I can't attest this will work for everyone, it worked for me. Hope this helps someone.

Having read these posts, I don't hold out much hope that my replacement iPad on its way from Apple, will resolve the problem.

I do very little on my iPad so it's unlikely to be app related as I've only got 2. On safari, I mainly just tinker around google and use hotmail.  Hardly memory bashing stuff

I've asked this question before though it's must have gotten lost amongst everything else......

What are our consumer rights in respect of a refund of the purchase of the iPad?

I'm in Germany and if I correctly understand what I was recently told, a supplier has the right to repair or replace 3 times before the the consumer can demand a refund. Apple explained that the warranty on the replacement only takes over from the original warranty.

    Any ideas?

I thin that we should sign web site petition and make Apple related web sites aware od it...

    >> Fabio, are you using Safari when the crash happens? If you are, what website are you viewing and what are you tapping on when it happens?

I was using Chrome and I was simply testing the system, like: open an app, use it, switch to another, use it, view a website(no "crashing site" I used!) open a tab, close it and reopen.

That's what I think a normal OS should be able to do...nothing more really. And a high tech expensive device like IPad Air should do these things, that's not science fiction!

iOS 7.1 doesn’t solve the issue on my iPad Air, unfortunately. It still crashed due to Low Memory.

A clean install of 7.1 works well. Restore and set up as new.

"After erasing and setting up as a new device, your device is now in a factory configuration. Test to determine if erasing and setting up as a new device resolved the issue. Content on the device may have caused unexpected behavior."

That crashed it to home screen, gave the first low memory message since installing iOS 7, and the Safari multi-tasking window showed a website I visited a month ago.

It crashes on iPaid Air running iOS 7.1, it doesn't on iPhone 5 running iOS 7.1.
