Q: Ipad air low memory crash

I came to this forum to see if other ipad air owners are experiencing same problem with low memory crashing as I do but seems like I'm one of the few people have this. So far I have 10 low memory crash reports. I also have about 30 more crash reports but it's from various apps. I got my ipad air on the launch day, second in line, here in California. Maybe I just have a defective one, I don't know. If you have same issues, please reply so I can determine if I should return it or just live with it. Closing apps every day is a hassle. I wish Apple just put in extra gig of ram. Overall, I am extremely happy with my ipad. There are so many good this things to mention about this ipad but this is wrong thread to do that.

Nope, it's not just a wi-fi issue.  I have had the crashes occur on both wi-fi and cellular, consistently on three different devices (iPhone 5, iPad 2, and iPad Air) ever since iOS 7.  Also has occurred on several different wi-fi networks, and on LTE, 4G, and 3G.  On occasion, I have gone several hours of fairly heavy Safari use between crashes, only to have the frequent crashes return.  So, I hope the issue is resolved for you, but I would not bank on it.  Because this problem occurs for me on three different devices now, I am certain it is not an iPad Air issue but an iOS 7 issue.  (It may well be that the iPad Air's RAM is not up to snuff, but that seems to me a different and separate issue.)

Is anyone else experiencing any crashing of the iTunes app on their iPad Air if they try to preview movies in the iTunes app while holding the iPad in landscape position (horizontally)?  My iPad air consistently crashes with low memory errors in this scenario.  Anyone else?

iOS 7.1 Safari crashes guaranteed. It is such a popular feature that apple will keep it moving forward.

I have never had an iPad but the GF has had a 32GB  iPad 2 (m/n A1395, 512mb RAM) for over 2 years, no problems. She just upgraded to IOS 7.0.4 on the pad and her iPhone 4 and seemingly no problems on either. I just tried to crash it by opening one of the pages suggested here that will crash the iPad Air consistently,

    http://9to5mac.com/2013/11/08/a-week-with-the-ipad-air-in-three-words-believe-th e-hype/

It opened, no problem but took a second to catch up while scrolling.

This past summer she gave me the cash to get an iPad and I told her I was going to wait for the new ones tto show. So last week I got a 32GB iPad Air on sale from Target but before I opened it I found this thread. I have until Feb 24 to return it as long as it's not opened so it sits on a shelf until this get's figured out.

Then I read the best thing to do is find an iPad 4 with the A6 chip and older IOS 6 installed and avoid the problem. Found a 32GB at Walmart for $449 with free shipping and Bluetooth speakers. That one is on it's way as we speak and I have until Feb. to return it unopened also. It too will sit.

So they'll both stay on the shelf, unopened until someone at Apple comes clean as to what the problem actually is. If an IOS7 upgrade solves the problem before Feb. I'll keep the Air. If it's a hardware issue and they need to add more RAM I may return both and wait for the new model to show.

If they are in denial I'll use the iPad 4.

Or I may just go another route.

You're going to be waiting a long time. I can understand your logic but ultimately it will back fire when you want to install new apps that require ios 7. The air is the best tablet in my opinion despite its flaws, that being said it's hardware is better equipped to handle iOS 7. IOS7.1 should be coming out in the new year if not sooner. One day that iPad 4 will need to be updated to iOS7 and it feels like a brick compared to the Air. Unless your goal is to keep iOS 6 as long as you possibly can and run the oldest version of apps for ios6 if you can even install them, like it says below. JUMP.

P.S. Safari always crashes. Even on my iPad 3 with iOS 6 it would violently crash from time to time. Not as frequently as Safari on iOS 7 but no Safari is crash proof. It needs an air bag my friend.

... guess upgrading to 2 gig of ram wasn't a bad idea after all or maybe a DDRx speed step up,

i mean, since we are now on a 64 bit architecture hardware !

... mmmh leave it all to software optimization you say ...

i expect to buy a completed product not a beta that would solve all it's problems half way to the next cycle ! You are losing customer trust.

    I'm NOT SATISFIED HERE !

    Hi everyone

Not wanting to hijack this thread and I haven't read all pages but most.....

I was sooooo waiting to buy my first ipad (mini) in these new releases. Then that became soooooo wanted to buy my first ipad (air) and tablet and also managed to put myself in a great spot to get a good price (store vouchers and discounts) that this stuff up/short fall has totally stopped me in my tracks.

One of my primary uses of a tablet (50 %) I envisage will be web browsing with 33% games for me and my toddler hence my concern. I will also use for viewing photos and video (I'll use the mac for editing).

I'm now strongly considering buying the fire kindle hdx (8.9"). I'm accepting of it's smaller (medium) size which is larger than the nexus 7. Having an imac as my premium pc am I going to enter into a world of problematic dramas using these two different "ecosystems". I know amazon does not have as many apps but I'm thinking it had most main/popular ones. Or should I wait for the next ipad with 2gb in 4 or 10 months time?

Any guidance views on this? Anyone else thinking the same.

This appears to be a sad day for apple - under spec'd tablet. And then there was the issue last year when I bought the imac of announcing the new imac but not having it available for a few months due to production issues. Apple seems to be "winging it" a little bit in trying to keep ahead of its competition or fixing themselves to announce new products when the timing against opposition releases dictates it regardless of their products being almost 100% ready to go. Or maybe that's the IT world as a whole?

Again apologies if this question here is misplaced

Your comment is not misplaced. My perspective to your comment: I use my desktop for digital artwork using Photoshop, Teragen, Bryce, Universe and photo editing. I never expected my iPad to handle these tasks, rather I think of it more as a personal assistant. I accept it's limitations. In that role, I feel it handles my tasks admirably.

I own a iPhone 4S and an iPad 3. Both have served me well with no problems or crashes all the way to iOS7.0.4.

I purchased the iPad Air on day one and almost immediately saw it crash multiple times. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. I read this entire thread and last Friday, contacted an Apple advisor who suggested that I wipe it clean an do a hard wire re-install of iOS7. I went to the Genius Bar to have this done and to document my problem because I intend to ask for a refund if he Air continued to crash. It has been 6 days since I had it "fixed" and so far, I have not experienced any crashes. After reading this tread, I seem to be in the minority.

I consider the iPad Air the best designed, most elegant tablet at this time. However, if it starts to crash the way it did a week ago, I will ask for a refund.

There will always be "new and better " devices coming off the line. 2GB?, probably. 4K iMac 's probably. When to pull the trigger is the tough part.

Personally I think once Apple fixes the iOS7 memory management issues it's been plagued with, the iPad Air 1GB model will be fine.  What's unfortunate is all of us who have been burnt by the lack of oversight and the frustrating silence of Apple regarding this matter. As I stated previously, I returned the Air and found a 128GB flawless iPad 4 for an insanely good deal.  I seldom get crashes on the 4 with iOS7.0.4. I would say about 1/20th the amount of crashes on the 4 compared to the Air, which to me truly indicates the 64bit prowess vs. the ram size + the funked memory management of IOS7.

Looking back at the history of your iPad ownership (personally i've owned a 2,3,4, mini, and Air) and what made my currently relationship to my iPad so solid and appreciated was its dependability and reliability.  The Air experience, though short at a mere 2 weeks and about 50 crashes - left a coating of wasabi in my mouth that wont be easily washed away.

I think i'm most anticipating an official "bug/fix" report from Apple to address these low memory issues. I want to see what they admit to regarding this clear botch of current gen tech. This will highly determine my future with their products.

Then again from Apple's perspective, I suppose it wouldn't be good for the share holders if they just came out and said.. "yeah, pretty much every iPad Air is crashing, and existing iPad's have had an 65% increase in crash rate after moving to our latest OS".

I will reiterate - moving back to the 4 was a good choice for me as I seldom get any crashes. i think it's been at least 5-6 days without a crash at this point, whereas the Air would crash at least 5-6 times a day.

Hi and thanks for your notes on your experience with the air

i'm not fussed with the "new and better" option around the corner - especially when it's 12 months normally between ipads but the safari crashing has frozen my purchase

if a 2 gb comes out ANY time next year I am happy to buy one now and then sell and upgrade next release and have that ipad last me another 2-3 years ideally. (especially as i can pick up the ipad at 20% off due to vouchers and staff discount this time).

however i'm fearful of buying a lemon - it's one thing buying an ipad now with a few hiccups (ie a  little bit of crashing that sometimes happens, as it does with my iphone 4s every now and then - i rarely have less than 6 tabs open) versus buying a product that is totally r00ted (and i dont mean in a tech geek kind of way) that will only do my head in.

** i find it odd that i'm thinking of buying a product that will have some drama with it - it's just a matter of how much **

in my curious searching for android alternatives, EVEN though i like the idea of staying in one ecosystem for simplistic and compatability reasons, i have come across that Kindle fire hdx and it does look VERY slick against a slightly underperforming ipad and competitive even against a good one

BUT i dont want to open that pandora's box if that is going to do my head in. i'm thinking however it may not do my head in, based on how i will and what i'll use my tablet for (surfing, games and my own ripped music) mind you i guess it's easier to sync my ripped cds on to an ipad than learn to use/find other programs for my kindle.......better the devil you know????

did i mention this is doing my head in!!!!!!

i also am disappointed that (almost) all these tech sites that have reviewed the ipad air and told everyone all about it's bells and whistes and how great it is, by either playing with it for a week or simply reading the press release have not come back to explore and discuss this (supposed) issue of the 64 bit and the 1gb (anand excused) - is that just me??

    so...my choices are...

    1) buy an ipad air and cross my fingers that ongoing safari crashes get solved via software updates (ios 7.4???) and later upgrade to next release - but take that risk of "frustration at hand" (literally) - souns as if spoken like a 15 year old boy (i'm 43 for the record)

    2) just wait for apple to announce a fix and or new ipad in the coming months/quarter and have one less toy in the meantime

    3) look a little further into the kindle and if i buy one enjoy a great working product (looks great) with this (on the other side) potentially opening up a can of worms and headache - should i keep it simple and not? My wife had a samsung galaxy and i am glad i replaced that with an iphone 5s (video compatability issues with imac without converting files). i dont want that again.

    that's my dilemna

if anyone knows more re the kindle fire or can help in my decision, let me know

    cheers all

    peter t
