Q: Ipad air low memory crash

I came to this forum to see if other ipad air owners are experiencing same problem with low memory crashing as I do but seems like I'm one of the few people have this. So far I have 10 low memory crash reports. I also have about 30 more crash reports but it's from various apps. I got my ipad air on the launch day, second in line, here in California. Maybe I just have a defective one, I don't know. If you have same issues, please reply so I can determine if I should return it or just live with it. Closing apps every day is a hassle. I wish Apple just put in extra gig of ram. Overall, I am extremely happy with my ipad. There are so many good this things to mention about this ipad but this is wrong thread to do that.

Can't wait to see what they suggest this time

I have a new iPad on it's way from China, due here Tuesday.  I came across this thread and it

scared me a little.  I was ready to cancel my order.  I brought up Apple chat and the person from Apple, supposedly, had no idea what I was talking about.  She kept saying, they had sold millions of the Air's and this is the first she heard of any problems.  I gave her the link to this discussion, she claimed she couldn't open it.  I suggested she check it out on her own, since it was on the iStore page.  She did say I have until January 12th to return it.  I will have a couple weeks to test it out to see if I have the problem many of you are reporting.

" I gave her the link to this discussion, she claimed she couldn't open it."

I take it she was trying to open it on an iPad Air?

I have to repeat yet again that this is not an iPad Air problem per se; it's an iOS 7 problem. I have had this Safari crashing issue on two other devices ever since updating them from iOS 6 to iOS 7.  Yes, the problem persists on the iPad Air, which, unfortunately, can only be has with iOS 7. I'd love to be running iOS 6 on the iPad Air until Apple get iOS 7 sorted out; I bet it would rock. So I regard this as an iOS 7 software issue--even if more RAM could cure the problem, all that means is that Apple is foisting on us software that NONE of the hardware it sells can handle.  What could go wrong?

If not for the constant Safari crashing, I'm sure I would absolutely love the iPad Air.  Unlike some others have reported, the Safari issue is the only major one I have had with it.  But I use my iPad heavily for online work and leisure so that's enough to have me DISGUSTED at this point, after struggling with this issue on all my iOS devices since September with no fix from Apple so far.  Given that Safari in iOS 6 worked fine on less powerful iOS devices than the Air, I have to believe that this particular issue is fixable through a software update and that what has really happened here is Apple rolled out iOS 7 with this major bug in it.

All that being said, if a slowdown in iPad Air sales is what it takes to get Apple's attention and finally fix this issue, so be it.  And if Apple does happen to issue a "refresh" of the Air with more RAM a few months after I paid almost $1,000 to snap this one up, well, I'm sure many of us will be beyond angry.

I ws in Target yesterday and tried out another iPad Air on the 9-5Mac website given here. Crashed Safari right away so I opened it up agagin and left the pad open to this discussion for others to see. Another guy was there looking to buy one but said he was holding off as he had heard about this problem too.

You know this is beginning to remind me of the iPad one on iOS 5.1.1. iPad 1 worked fine until iOS 5. But iOS 5 was too  it for the available RAM and things started to crash. Now comes iOS 7. Same thing ... Maybe worse ... On ALL devices. Too big for the available RAM.

I still use iPad 1. It is usable, but it does crash often. I was hoping to upgrade to get more RAM. I am beginning to be convinced that 1gb is not enough for iOS 7. THBS I personally know folks on iOS 7 who report no problems. Upgraded my wife's iPad 3 to iOS 7.0.4 with no problems. But she does a fixed limited amount of things on it with limited web surfing. Have a friend with Retina Mini. He reports no problems, but we do see the occasional crash while playing head-to-head command and conquer red alert.

My iPhone 5s crashes occasionally but not enough to really concern me.

So ... I'm waiting to see some kind of a resolution or even acknowledgment of a problem before I jump in and buy a new iPad.

Thank you for this info. I like to say this solved my question but low memory crash still exist so this helped me to decide to return my ipad air and ipad mini retina. Anandtech performed numerous tests and he knows what he is talking about. Apple should hire Anandtech and fire current engineers. If Steve Jobs was still around, he will not tolerate this and make whoever was responsible for this mess pay for it by firing them.

That is exactly what I did when I got ipad air on November 1. Since my backup data was over 6 months old and ipad air being 64 bit, I decided to start fresh. Hard wired to computer with iTunes,  set up as new ipad, and installed apps one be one. It's crashing left and right. I would close all apps, delete safari data, hard reset, then only open safari with one tab open to 9to5 web site (article about how good ipad air is) and it crashes even when I'm slowly scrolling down. Sometimes it crashes 3 seconds after opening to that web page. I think that web site is intended to be viewed from computer or any other devise except for ipad air. Author was clearly aiming for non ipad air owners.

Sorry it's not working out for you. Since I am one of the few on this tread who has a "fixed" Air, I will try to list or show how mine is used. Currently only about 250 photos, more then 300 bookmarks, 79 Apps, 50 plus PDF's in iBooks. Normally I receive only about 30 emails a day. I surf maybe 7 favorite websites, 5 or 6 times a day. Ebay is one site that crashed frequently prior to the "fix". I have usually 15 to 20 watched items. Most of the time photos are taken with my iPhone 4S or my professional camera. Very little photography with the Air. I use my Air to build and edit my WordPress website. I watch movies and television shows. I do video phone calls. That's about it on the Air. I do heavier work on my desktop.

I hope Apple will address this issue if it's wide spread. We are a small group, about 70 of us so far, reporting this problem on this tread. And yes there are other forums reporting this problem also. Apple has sold millions of Air's thus far, maybe it's only affecting a few, otherwise those millions out there are a silent majority, or maybe they don't think to report, or they accept the problem, or just maybe the majority of Air's are just fine, I don 't know. I will keep an open mind to the problem.

Etype2 can you check this for me on your fixed air please?

Reset the air in the usual way so nothing is running.

Hold the air in landscape mode.

    Open iTunes app.

    Open the movies section.

Pick a movie to preview - one that is HD - superman for example.

    Open the preview.

    Watch a few seconds.

Stop the preview and move into the TV section for preview.

    Open a tv show preview.

    Go back to movies.

Now my ipad air, my wife's ipad air, my sons ipad air and every single unit in my local Apple store on display crashes iTunes during this process - some sooner than others.

If this doesn't happen on yours then it seems we may have identified a batch hardware issue and not a software bug.

If this is the case then good news because we can (those with the defect) all return our airs and find out which serials are related to the batch of bad airs.

    Thanks!

    Matt

I finally returned my 4th replacement iPad Air and purchased an 11 inch MacBook Air.  I spoke to the manager of the Apple store and told him I have the same low memory issues.  They gave me a full refund including the purchased Apple Care and deducted the amount from my purchased MacBook Air. I decided to do this because I don't plan to purchase an iPad anytime soon.  I've been burned by the iPad Air.  I also listened to one of your advices to let others know about this issue. Sure enough the manager denied having any complaints about iPad Air's low memory issues.  I did a video about this that way other consumers will know our nightmare.  I only used my iPad 2 and did a YouTube video capture this morning  and I posted it here.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0JAkACZjwg&feature=c4-overview&list=UUX_qCnp39-- PQCk2bafu8mg
