Q: Ipad air low memory crash

I came to this forum to see if other ipad air owners are experiencing same problem with low memory crashing as I do but seems like I'm one of the few people have this. So far I have 10 low memory crash reports. I also have about 30 more crash reports but it's from various apps. I got my ipad air on the launch day, second in line, here in California. Maybe I just have a defective one, I don't know. If you have same issues, please reply so I can determine if I should return it or just live with it. Closing apps every day is a hassle. I wish Apple just put in extra gig of ram. Overall, I am extremely happy with my ipad. There are so many good this things to mention about this ipad but this is wrong thread to do that.

Let me see if I can summarize the few tips to mitigate issues, salted amongst the speculations and complaints in this thread.  These seemed to have helped me reduce the quantity of Air problems:

In settings, under Accessibility, turn on Reduce Motion

    Turn off Background App Refresh

For Safari, remove all bookmarks from the bookmarks bar

    Under icloud, turn off Safari

I also have keychain set to off

Other things I have done to reduce system churn:

Under iTunes and App Store, automatic updates to off

Location Services off for all apps except those that really need it, like maps

    Manual fetch of mail

Then there are the more obvious, as with iso6:

Close running apps when you are done with them

Close Safari tabs when you are done with them

I still have crashes, but not nearly as often.

As I commented earlier ios7 is not matured. Memory management is not as good as ios6. Safari is flaky. Some apps are not behaving well under 7. There are interface issues not yet resolved.  Etc etc as with complex, immature software.  It may be that the 64 bit version of ios7 is more problematical than the 32 bit version at this time.

Is lack of memory a fatal flaw?  Yes I was disappointed the Air didn't come with 2gb of ram or more. But my expectation is that the software will improve so that the things I use the ipad for will work as well and better than with my old ipad4. I like my Air and am not sorry I bought it.  For one thing, I have noticed that Candy Crush, a graphics intensive app, drains the battery significantly less on the Air.  Just an example.

For "power users" maybe the Air will not be fully satisfactory.  But then, the Air is a Tablet.  It's not designed to do things a laptop can do.  Lots of options these days for those who want a box that tries to bridge that divide.  There will always be websites that are not fully compatible with iPads, but many will make the effort to improve because the audience is huge and growing.

I will do the hard refresh to see if things improve.  If not, I am in no hurry to exercise my warranty for a replacement.  I'm happy enough and will await further developments.

Here's some more examples of IOS 7 crashing.  I can't reproduce the iTunes store crash on my retina mini (got it Nov 12th), but I can reproduce this:

Has anyone had these issues in newly delivered Airs, say, in the last week or so.  US was out of them, so

I have been tracking mine from the factory in China, should arrive tommorow.  We know that Apple is not getting in front of this problem (which is the smarter way to handle it) and continue to deny, deny, deny.  So, I wondered if they may come up with a fix and imple

ment it quietly in the new builds.  I was going to just cancel my order, but they say I have until the 12th of January to return it for a full refund, so I may play with it and see if one's "hot off the presses" are more stable.  I will post my results to this thread.

I know a sure way to prevent ipad from crashing. Just turn it off. Haha I'm being silly.

I've found this YouTube video crashing inside settings.http://youtu.be/Ap3G98Q40oE

This does not bother me because who really double taps brightness? But this shows there is serious quality control issue here.

Like you davidb I'm not so worried about my iPad....but I hope that Apple or someone else will say something like: "ok guys, we know the problem, we are working to fix it, it is just a software problem".

I want my iPad work without crashing and without turning everything off.

However I 'll try to do an hard reset too...and wait for a definitive solution.

So, in other words, disable most of the functionality of this brand new device costing several hundred dollars and it becomes somewhat less unusable?

Sorry for the snarky tone of that; it's directed at Apple, not you. I appreciate your taking the time to write out all those tips. But, ultimately, a (partial) "fix" that requires disabling everything, erasing my bookmarks, swiping apps away manually, etc. is far from acceptable.

APPLE NEEDS TO FIX IOS 7!!!!!!!!!!

Im having unexpected crashes on my iPad air. Not always and not with the same apps but happens just in the middle of a work presentation or something important. I dont know if theres something related with the memory or the iOS 7 or something about the device. My iPad Air is 128 gbs.

When I first go the iPad air a couple of times I saw the apple icon but it was so quick and didnt seem to be rebooting that I didn't know what was going on.  That hasn't continued but I have had safari crash on me at least once a day since then.  Having an iPad 1 I know how to limit the required processing power, but I didn't expect to have to do that with a brand new iPad.

I called Apple Support today to add my questions and concerns but specifically regarding safari.  I didn't mention this thread and I have to say, I don't think she has had many calls regarding this issue based on how long it took her to give me advice.  I agree, Tulinghorn,  that I didn't buy this new iPad just to have to have the same issues that I have on my Original iPad 1.  I had already turned off some of the general settings that she suggested but why should I have to do that.   I certainly let her know that I was concerned about the future of my ipad at the rate it was going.  She opened up a case number for me for whatever good it does.  My diagnostics showed Safari and backboard crashes--backboard apparently being a part of IOS 7.

I just restored it per her suggestions but don't hold out too much hope.  I wouldn't be surprised if there were others having this problem and just working around it...

I keep getting email notifications about new posts and it turns out Apple is removing them. Anyone else have this problem?

Others have reported censorship of some posts - I guess it's for trolling or otherwise being mean.

I don't want to be mean to Apple - I love most of their products - I do object to the way I have been told that they are not aware of this issue when there is no way I can imagine that this has sneaked past their team. They employ some of here smartest and most artistic people on the planet - I am surprised that some corporate types are getting away with less honesty than a brand I love.

Surely it would be more simple to just say "sure, we are aware of this problem - it's a software bug, we are working on it and expect a fix in a few weeks" rather than "wow, this is a surprise, we've never had a report of this before. No air, no records on my system what so ever"

I have always wondered what system they mean when they say that "on my system" do they mean their ipad perhaps ;-) ( sorry, couldn't resist - just kidding )

But it would be wonderful to have some Apple tech moderators on these forums from time to time. I am new here really - do they ever come and visit do you all know?

Matt, I agree. I'm betting there has been a huge argument at Apple about how to handle his - whether to admit there is a problem.

And I bet nothing has been decided because you know who is not there.  WWSJD?

Many posts have gone missing. I can't see any clear pattern as to what is verboten.
