Q: Ipad air low memory crash

I came to this forum to see if other ipad air owners are experiencing same problem with low memory crashing as I do but seems like I'm one of the few people have this. So far I have 10 low memory crash reports. I also have about 30 more crash reports but it's from various apps. I got my ipad air on the launch day, second in line, here in California. Maybe I just have a defective one, I don't know. If you have same issues, please reply so I can determine if I should return it or just live with it. Closing apps every day is a hassle. I wish Apple just put in extra gig of ram. Overall, I am extremely happy with my ipad. There are so many good this things to mention about this ipad but this is wrong thread to do that.

    Regarding http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57616177-94/ipad-surface-kindle-owners-reveal-t heir-top-gripes/

It's about time that something about our tablet problems appeared in a "news" article, but it didn't go far enough.  The memory management problems affect far more apps than just Safari crashes.  I'm retired and have time to be an avid reader of tech articles.  I've been very surprised that I haven't seen more written about our issues.  I'm sure that Apple is working on a software fix (fingers crossed), but more squeak would get us oiled sooner.

Really glad I got rid of this iPad Air when I did.  My iPad 4 still hasn't crashed at all and I've been using for like 5 days.  My iPad Air crashed like 10 times a day.  Unbelievable!  Although this IOS 7 may have some bugs, I don't believe that was the cause of the problem.  I think it all has to do with the design of the hardware components.  In particular, the super processor with little RAM to support it.  No computer knowledge really, but it makes logical sense to me.  I'm going to be very nervous about buying any new iPad tablets in the future.  Especially, the day when they are released as I did with the Air.  I spent premium price and sold it for less, losing money.  That device, to me, is worthless with the way it crashes every five minutes.

Glad it is working nicely for you.  I don't understand why both of the iPad airs I had crashed all the time.  All I did was use safari and it was crashing on the sites I use.  Hope it continues to work out for you.  There are definitely plenty of others having this issue so you may be one of the few who are not.

Re: iOS 7.0.x on 32-bit iDevices

You do realize that in order for iOS 7 to work on both 32-bit and 64-bit devices, there must either be a 32-bit and 64-bit code branch or 32-bit code must run emulated on the 64-bit devices. This would easily explain the fact that 32-bit devices are less buggy than 64-bit devices. Either the 64-bit code branch is buggier than the 32-bit code branch or the 32-bit emulation is buggy. Either way it can be fixed by fixing the software. In other words, it doesn't mean that the new 64-bit devices have hardware problems.

I am betting that this will all be fixed by some future version of iOS. THE SOONER THE BETTER!

Exactly. iOS 7 is all but what maybe 3 months old on a complete overhaul including new 64-bit hardware support?

Yes the crashes are annoying but updates are in the woodwork and should fix a majority of issues.

Do I want 2+gb of ram on the next iPad / iPhone **** yeah! But let's give Apple a bit of time to make things right.

It would be great if non developers could report the bugs we have in iOS 7 but I still would chose iOS any day of the week over Android and Windows 8

Well, I'Im not dependant on an iPad, haven't had one yet. After buying a 32 Gb WiFi iPad 4 from Walmart (returned) and an iPad Air 32Gb from Target (which has remained unopened,  I will wait for the the rumored iPad Pro.

I assume they will have it all worked out by then but you never know.  Snow Leopard was the most stable OS they've had for the past years, I lost it when they gave me a new iMac last year.

I think so and my last post was deleted by the Host for speculating about that rumored device. I'm watching it.

I'm confident Apple will work out the issues with the Air.

I agree that it's a hopeful sign that these issues are now getting some mainstream press. Hopefully that means the pressure is on for Apple to come forth with a fix.  Of course, the CNET article continues to spout some unhelpful misinformation:

Suggests this is ONLY an iPad Air problem. It is NOT; it's an iOS 7 problem that has plagued all my iOS devices (three different ones) ever since iOS 7 came out.

It's not just a Flash problem; many sites seemingly without Flash crash (I don't think the problem is really site-specific anyway--it can crash on any site at any time--although some sites seem more crash prone than others).  In past iOS versions, even though iOS has never had Flash, sites with

    Flash didn't cause crashes.

The "usual fixes" and trips to the Apple Store do NOT fix the problem! People have been trying those things for three months now, most with no results.  (I've been using iOS devices since iPhone 3G and computers for way longer than that; at this point I feel like screaming every time someone suggests rebooting, clearing cookies, resetting, and the like for this problem. Obviously, those are the first things many of us tried before coming onto a forum to rant about an unfixable problem!)

I'd like to add that I have now joined the ranks of users who can claim more general crashes, i.e., not just Safari crashing and going back to home screen but just my Air crashing more generally and reverting to the black "apple screen."  I have now had this happen at least 4 times the past couple days, when I wasn't doing anything in particular.

I'm giving Apple one more chance here--against my better judgment, yesterday I bought another Air as a Christmas gift.  "Mrs. Claus" has long wanted an iPad of her own, and I was planning to get it for her this Christmas, but I've been sitting the fence after these issues with my Air/iOS 7 to see if Apple sorted it out before Christmas. I'm taking a leap of faith that this is primarily a software problem that Apple will actually be fixing at some point soon.  If they don't, they may want to consider changing the company name to Lemon.

If Apple can take a clunk of aluminum metal and make it into a sleek case filled with other company's products.

If Apple can take an idiot employees in a "genius" where they are trained to say "reboot, reset, and clear data"

Then I'm sure apple can fix this software mess.

Worst case scenario, we can take this lemon  and make it into a lemonade. Recycling centers will pay you cash for the aluminum case.

I couldn't read this WHOLE discussion (quite a few pages ;)) - but you all seem to think that the safari crashas and apple logo-crashes are related?

From day 1 I've been getting these crashes - it began with a frozen touchscreen and no response to any keys. When I did a hard reboot this would resolve and it would repeat itself after a few hours, or days. On my iPad 2 with exactly the same apps and the same iOS this has NEVER happened.

Sometimes it doesn't happen for a week or something, to repeat itself later and sometimes it happens a couple of times a day. Sometimes it doesn't freeze at first, but I just see the Apple logo coming out of nowhere and the iPad reboots itself. Sometimes it freezes and doesn't even react to a hard reboot, and this Apple-logo-thing will show itself after a few minutes. The safari crashes are always there too.

I've contacted AppleCare and was advised to reset the whole iPad via iTunes and not restore it via back-up. Did that, installed a few apps that I use a lot and that usually make my iPad crash most (Sketchbook Pro, iMovie, that kind of work). It crashed within a few hours. Then I got advised to delete all non-Apple apps. Did that and the safari crashes were still there and after I gave my iPad quite a hard time (switching between apps fastly) there was the Apple logo.

The guy at AppleCare didn't think this was normal (although he couldn't find something 'abnormal' in the Diagnostics and Usage, apart from a lot  of Low Memory-crash reports - it sounded like a software-problem to him, but this should have been resolved with the things I did) so I'm advised to call back tomorrow and ask for a replacement or reparation.

What do you think? It's seems such a shame to return such a piece of hardware - but on the other hand I payed quite a lot for it and you would think it would be a great step forward from the iPad 2! (And it IS - in a lot of things, like the screen, speed etc. - but those crashes are not really what I expected to say the least..)

I'm just worried of getting another one and then facing the same problems again - that it does maybe have something to do with apps that don't react to well with the hardware or something? But apps like Sketchbook Pro and Photo editors should be able to work fine on this new iPad, right? And those are the apps I work with the most...

Kind of in conflict with myself wether to return it or not, but I think I don't have much of a choice, do you?

Whistler, your story and Apples response is a familiar song and you'll find versions throughout his thread.

It's sad that what Apple had you do is unchanged from the beginning.

Some Apple support people have been better than others. You should ask to speak with a senior advisor.

Replacing the device hasn't helped anyone.

It's an iOS 7 issue on all generations of iPads but not all iPads.

Apple engineers are well aware of the issue and according to my senior advisor are working on a fix but no firm date.

Right now the only thing to do is wait it out - or return the device.

I have the problems on an iPad 4, but it's still quite functional.

    Whistler29,

I REALLY want to to tell you to hang in there and that it will become better with each successive version/patch of iOS, BUT this is what I want to believe ... I do not have any inside knowledge of this.

I personally think that Apple rushed the 64-bit devices were rushed to market in time for Christmas before iOS was fully checked out.
