Q: Ipad air low memory crash

I came to this forum to see if other ipad air owners are experiencing same problem with low memory crashing as I do but seems like I'm one of the few people have this. So far I have 10 low memory crash reports. I also have about 30 more crash reports but it's from various apps. I got my ipad air on the launch day, second in line, here in California. Maybe I just have a defective one, I don't know. If you have same issues, please reply so I can determine if I should return it or just live with it. Closing apps every day is a hassle. I wish Apple just put in extra gig of ram. Overall, I am extremely happy with my ipad. There are so many good this things to mention about this ipad but this is wrong thread to do that.

If you really like iPads then I would return it and get another ipad and you will have a new return date. You can keep doing this until they get it fixed or until new ipad air 2 comes out.

If you are open to other tablets, Samsung Galaxy note 10.1 2014 edition is one amazing tablet. I'm my opinion, it's way better than iPads. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cGObL7C5doE it comes with 3gigs of ram!

Unfortunately, I'm stuck here with my ipad air because it was given to me as a gift. It's fine but I would trade up to samsung in a heart beat if I had that option.

My iPad Air is constantly crashing, performing a soft reboot each time. Super annoying. It's sounding like it is a result of insufficient RAM for a 64bit architecture processor. Apple messed up big time.

Yep. This is super annoying. I have a mini retina 64GB with LTE. These devices are not cheap. Safari just 'sploded again off my screen. Diags showed a low memory report at the same time.

    Try to do this:

    - restore your device to factory settings and delete all data and content

    - using iTunes from a desktop Computer, install IOS 7.0.4 (the last available)

    - choose to set up your device as NEW

See this article for details :

Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414

It should mitigate the problem, but it does not fix it completely...

We are waiting for a new fix from Apple...

Maybe in IOS version 7.1... :-(((((

    Ciao

Ok so I've had 7.1 for about 5 days.

I can't agree with you Martin that Its flawless, but it has only crashed out of apps 3 times in 5 days which is a dramatic drop since 7.0.4, and this 7.1 is still a beta so hopefully by release date in Feb 2014 it will be even better.

I certainly hope you are right that 7.1 will mostly fix things. And it can't come soon enough.  In 7.0.4, amazingly, the problem seems to be getting WORSE every day.  My main complaint originally was Safari constantly crashing, which itself seems to be getting worse and worse, but now I'm also experiencing frequent crashes with other apps that were mostly working fine before, especially Books and Notes.  (This morning, Notes refuses to work for me at all. I've been trying to paste some text into a note for half an hour, including reboots, and it crashes every time.) I'd like to see Apple blame the app developers for this one.

Maybe now that all those Airs that were sitting under Christmas trees have been unwrapped and start getting brought to the Genius Bars because of the crash problems Apple will feel the pressure to get the fix out sooner rather than later.  I remain disappointed with Apple over the fiasco in releasing these products with such bugs in the first place. After being a (mostly) satisfied Apple customer for many years, my faith in the company has now been shaken.

The iPad Air is my 2nd Apple product.  As a result of this crashing issue, I probably am done with future Apple products.  Too bad.

Since September 2013, there were many evidences of the problem

That is, since the launch of the brand new IPhone 5s...

See below some extracts from the discussion:

iPhone 5s sporadically crashing to Apple logo

    http://forums.imore.com/ios-7/263115-iphone-5s-sporadically-crashing-apple-logo- 4.html

    -----

"Sooo I've owned every single iPhone since their launch in 2007.

So far, I believe that iOS 7/iPhone 5s has been by far the buggiest.

So here's been my experience... I got a 64 gig gray model on launch day and the problem started happening almost right away. I went back to the store and they replaced the phone b/c of another issue. Then I kept it as new and downloaded the apps directly from the app store. Low and behold the problem started happening again. I then put my old back up on the phone as I knew it was not a problem with the backup.

So I used that second phone for a couple of weeks and dealt with the phone rebooting every day or two. 7.0.3 came out and since it did not take care of the problem I figured I'd call apple care. They went ahead and replaced the phone two days ago and this third iPhone i've owned is also having this problem.

I've done everything that has been suggested from killing background app refresh to reducing motion and the problem still persists. Usually when multitasking or when dealing with an update to a passbook.

So I really believe it's an iOS issue when people us the phone very heavily, or that there is a very common app (like Facebook) that is causing this problem. This is very frustrating and not the type of experience I've come to expect from Apple. I hope this gets fixed with the next release.

OH and for those of you who say it's not a big problem b/c apple hasn't acknowledged it, well, they didn't acknowledge the flaw that allowed people to bypass the lock screen, or the motion/accelerometer issue. They just took care of it via a software fix. Just b/c people aren't complaining or noticing it, doesn't mean it's not happening on a widespread manner."

    -----

I don't get it why Apple put only 1 GB of RAM in the 64 bit 5S. They could have just thrown in 2 or 4GB. Memory is cheap, no matter what Apple say. But maybe even that would have affected the sacred profit margin too much, the margin which is the highest ever witnessed in consumer eletronics, and so now users put up with an underpowered phone. Oh well. Not going to update to 5S myself. Clearly, the design is still immature and just too cheap. A phone that costs EUR 700, or a thousand dollars, should not be crashing left and right because it is running out of RAM. Period.

    ------

My phone has crashed regularly. At least every other day. Safari and multitasking seem to be the biggest culprits. I'm kind of used to it from having a jailbroken 4s for over a year. That phone rarely crashed with stock ios 6. I'm just a little disappointed to see that their new flagship phone and OS are having this issue.

Well, opened my iPad AIr Christmas morning, have been putting through the paces ever since.  No problems/crashes as of yet.  How exactly do I find the report on any crashes in the future?  I had a theory that they may have tweaked the most recent Ipads at the factory, mine was just built there, as the US has no surplus that I know of.  Will keep my fingers crossed.

Phoned apple support was told there where some issues. Had me backup and reinstall. Now it won't even power up. Doesn't get recognized by ITunes. Totally dead.

Told we will send you a new one in 3-4 Buissiness days. It was new I just want one that works. Piece of crap may have to change to a Samsung.

Ipad air crashing in iTunes in landscape but not portrait. Has there been any word from Apple, or are they just sending out replacements with the same issue? A pretty futile exercise I'd say.

It's official (as if it wasn't before) this issue is a result of hardware deficiency, or the latest apple iOS devices only having 1GB of RAM on the A7 64 bit processor. The new processor consumes 30% more RAM than the 32 bit processor of previous iOS devices. This deficiency of RAM causes low memory crashes and soft reboots.

I am on my 3rd iPad Air. Each has performed a soft reboot in the first day of use, and continues to perform them a myriad of times throughout the week. Beyond frustrating. You pay hundreds of dollars for something that doesn't work. Apple, what an unnecessary and gracious error. It's not like you. Steve Jobs passing has caused the company to decline. It would have cost them little to upgrade the RAM to the necessary 2-4GB. Apple profits hundreds of dollars on each device sold. iOS Devices in 2014 will likely have this necessary upgrade as a "perk" that will be just another much overdue feature.

I have lost my good faith in Apple. They have lost their edge. They are no longer the innovative leader in electronics.
