Q: Ipad air low memory crash

I came to this forum to see if other ipad air owners are experiencing same problem with low memory crashing as I do but seems like I'm one of the few people have this. So far I have 10 low memory crash reports. I also have about 30 more crash reports but it's from various apps. I got my ipad air on the launch day, second in line, here in California. Maybe I just have a defective one, I don't know. If you have same issues, please reply so I can determine if I should return it or just live with it. Closing apps every day is a hassle. I wish Apple just put in extra gig of ram. Overall, I am extremely happy with my ipad. There are so many good this things to mention about this ipad but this is wrong thread to do that.

I agree with you. My iPad Air hasn't crashed either, I have tried the different tests purported on this thread, but I fundamentally agree with the basic premise that the 64 bit A7 processor is too much to handle for 1GB DRAM. Even those who do not experience crashes still see Diagnostics & Usage data filled to the brim with low memory warning logs.

So does our iPad 4th generation and our iPhones.  I just don't spend time looking at the diagnostics.  In reality, they've always showed lots of low memory logs.  Always.  What is important to me is if my devices run without issues and to that end, they do.

I have no doubt other's devices are crashing, though I have to wonder if looking for sites and trying to scroll as fast you can, and pinching and zooming is how someone "really" uses their device.  I know I'm going to be flamed for this, but it seems some the regulars on this thread are spending more time trying to find ways to crash their devices.

As to the issue in whole, I don't have a clue if it's because 1GB Ram is not enough, or if it's an issue with iOS.  But what I do feel pretty confident in is that whatever the issue, Apple will solve it.  They'll just solve it quietly, without fanfare.

I've never looked at my logs, I just care if it works. And it doesn't. I'm not doing any test pages or anything unusual. I just have safari and chrome crash on me frequently. It's so bad I'm thinking about getting rid of the air and switching to a Nexus tablet.

I don't doubt you're having issues.  I would be patient though.  Apple knows some people are having issues.  An update will come out and this will be resolved.

Are you so sure of that?

Because if it is not only a software problem, but a more complex problem caused by other things, like the new 64 bit architecture, the choice to save RAM in such a powerful device and so on, the low memory crashes won't be solved at all !

My experience with IOS Apple devices is rich of such low memory crashes events, from my old IPad 1 (having 256 MB of RAM) after I updated IOS from 4.3 to 5.1.

    NOTE:

IOS 5.1 required more RAM than IOS 4.3.... Is it just a coincidence?

So the problem is not new at all and well known to Apple, and many IOS versions have been introduced from then and NEVER solved the issue completely.

    Ciao

Hi all.  Still following this thread, thought I'd throw in again.

The short of it is, as others are saying, low memory alerts are common.  My wife's ipad4 still running ios6 has them. But it rarely if ever crashes.  It's an alert, not a crash event. It's about memory management. Ios6 does it well.  Generally, what I see is when ios6 can't get enough memory to run something, it just doesn't run it - stops in progress or crawls. Then you close some stuff, maybe reboot, move on.

Ios7 is not mature. It was rushed out to meet manufacturing deadlines.  64 bit architecture is new.  The fact that Apple is taking their time with iOS 7.1 leads me to believe the developers are in charge this time, not the salespeople.

In the meantime, you can help yourself minimize the crashes by doing some of the "memory management" things mentioned in the thread.  Close apps when you don't need them open.  Same with tabs in safari.  Turn off background app refresh. Turn on reduce motion. I also turned off mail fetch and limit push notifications and location services; no background downloads of apps or music.  Still get crashes occasionally, usually when lots of stuff is open, and safari is a common culprit. Your choice of evils - the more crippled, the less crashes?

As I say when asked, I love my Air, except that I have to run ios7 on it :)  I don't recommend anyone upgrade yet, if they are still on ios6.  Hang in there.

If only I had a time machine for iPad 3 I would have stuck with iOS 6 on it and never been tempted to purchase *yeah right* the Air! The sad thing everyone is here because of iOS7 so no one is going to come here before upgrading and heed our warnings, they  will shortly realize Safari is crashing like cars in a fast and furious movie.  For those who say their iPad Air isn't crashing I must say you are the lucky ones who picked up a golden lemon. Lend it to me for 5 minutes I will make it crash without going out of my way. Every single iOS7 device I have tested crashes violently. No seat belts worn by iOS7 to prevent an accident either!  Somebody write up Apple and give them a ticket. $2,000 fine per device should teach them.

Mark my words (prophesy, not knowledge)

The next 64-bit iOS devices will have at least 2gb of RAM, but the sad part is that the current 1gb devices will be hamstrung like the iPad 1 with regard to how far along the iOS upgrade path they can progress.

Unless Apple succeeds in doing the unheard of ... releasing OS upgrades that require less and less RAM ... the current devices are doomed to the same fate as the iPad 1.

64-bit architectures are great. Retina displays are great. But try come at the cost of being more RAM intensive.

    davidboughton,

I know you mean well and you may even be correct. But the solutions you offer are essentially "turn off all of the new functionality of iOS 7 and a lot of the functionality of iOS 6" and this will (may?) fix the problem.

Many of us got used to our iPad 1s crashing on websites and held out for the new Air or Mini only to experience the same problems.

The frustration is real and justified.

I would report a post that has just been deleted from this discussion https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5413826?start=30&tstart=0 (I think my post will be deleted soon too).

An user reported that we "ALL would be shocked to hear what an Apple senior advisor had to say as to what he is allowed to comment on in writing and how much of these issues are to remain in voice calls only ", talking about springboard crashes...

I answered him: please tell us.

And he answered me with this post that was deleted after a few minutes:

""""""""I plan on blowing the lid wide open on this idiot from Apple Corporate.  He "stepped in it" in more than one way.  I need to redact his name and my name from the voicemail and then I will post a link to the voicemail and a full transcript of what the Moron said.  I want the replacement phone they promised from the factory directly to me.  If he fails to do so I will post all of the information I have on every blog and community site.  And for the fun of it I may post a link to the all the personal social sites that this moron has.  It shows him in dozens of pictures drinking, drunk and using a shotgun as his *****.

In a nut shell, he admitted that Apple refused to allow him to put in writing steps deemed necessary by Apple Senior iOS Engineering to explore the issue I am having.  Then he went on to say what he can and cannot discuss with me about the situation.  Can we say COVER UP!!!

Apple knows there is a problem.

I had AppleCare ready to replace my iPhone 5s and then suddenly this person from Corporate stepped in and said I needed to jump through a dozen hoops before they would send me a new phone.  But at the same time refused to tell me in detail what the hoops were.   I reminded him that all i had to was run the phone over with my car and for $79. Apple would give me a new phone.

But there are several varieties of replacement  iPhones that Apple has.  One is directly off the factory production line (which I was promised), another is one that is made to be replacement phones (phones that made not have the latest tweaks to them), then the last is a certified refurbished iPhones.

I was promised a replacement phone from the factory production line that would have all the latest tweaks that Apple has done since releasing the phone.

Make sure you document all conversations and discussions and send a copy to the person you spoke with.  It keeps them honest and focused on what is going on.  It is truly a shame that so many of us are having this problem.  I looked at the phone today and had only disgust with such a wonderful piece of technology that continually crashes.  Today I had about six native apps crash incidents, which i documented using screen shots.

For what we are paying for the equipment and what Apple says the phone will do with all their advertisements and technical specification (not to mention what we pay the carriers) we deserve better.""""""

I don't know if my post will be deleted o I will have more serious problems with my account but everyone should know and have a copy of it in his/her email....

    Bye

Fabio, I had trouble following it as well. Didn't know who was saying what. It seemed to say someone from Apple corporate was dictating to senior advisors and engineers.

But I don't want to speculate.

An user talked with a senior advisor about our issues and from the discussion it emerged that :

    1-the advisor admitted that he is not allowed to talk about the problem;

2-Apple is trying to cover the issues.

Now we know why the answer from apple support is always the same: "you are the first and only one experiencing this problems..."

So i brought back my iPad Air 128GB to the Apple store for a full refund, bought on the 1st of November, returned on 4th January. no problems, they just processed the refund. Unfortunately I gave away my iPad 3rd gen, but I still have the iPad 1, crashes less than the Air and will use it until problems are sorted or new iPad is launched with MORE memory. I do miss it already, but I will not miss the memory management problems and I will not have the urge to throw it against the wall...

Have had my Air since Christmas, using it every day and putting it through the paces.  I did have a freeze up of the FB app, but when I re-installed it, no problems.  Diagnostic log shows some low memory crashes, but I wasn't aware of them at the time, meaning, they didn't noticeable affect anything.  I was planing on returning the Air before the January 7th deadline, but I am keeping it and will just hope a software update fixes the issues.  If it were a bigger issue for me, personally, I would ditch it...but it seems to be working OK for what I use it for (some browsing, occasional games, check email).

My fear, on these message boards, is that some of the posters may have been hired by the competition to exaaggerate the issues with the Air.  I am especailly suspect of those posters that mention by brand, the tablet they are going to purchase when they

    return the iPad.
